Dubai has launched an innovative global classification system designed to clarify the roles of humans and intelligent machines in the generation of research, academic, creative, and scientific content. This initiative comes at a time when the utilization of AI and automation in content creation is rapidly increasing.
The Human–Machine Collaboration (HMC) classification system was created by the Dubai Future Foundation and has received approval from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and the Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Sheikh Hamdan emphasized that differentiating between human-generated creativity and artificial intelligence poses significant challenges due to the fast pace of technological progress. “This is the reason we have established the world’s pioneering Human–Machine Collaboration Icons, which serve to clarify how research documents, publications, and various content types are produced,” he explained.
He urged researchers, authors, designers, and publishers worldwide to incorporate this system in a responsible manner that serves the public good. Furthermore, Sheikh Hamdan instructed all governmental bodies in Dubai to implement the system in their research and knowledge-driven efforts.
Human–Machine Collaboration Classification for AI-Generated Content
This classification presents five key icons that represent different degrees of human and machine collaboration:
- All Human: No machine involvement.
- Human Led: Content created by humans, with enhancements or checks performed by machines.
- Machine Assisted: A cooperative process where humans and machines iteratively contribute.
- Machine Led: Content generated by machines but reviewed by humans.
- All Machine: Entirely machine-generated without any human input.
Additionally, there are nine function-based icons indicating points of machine involvement—from ideation and data analysis to visual creation and design. Although the system does not specify the exact percentage of machine participation, its goal is to foster transparency and encourage creators to clarify the nature of their collaborative processes.
The Dubai Future Foundation states that these icons can be utilized across various sectors and formats, including images and videos, to enhance audience understanding of the sources of the content they engage with.
