European Union ambassadors informed Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri about a funding initiative exceeding $600 million for the regions affected in Lebanon during their meeting.
This announcement was made by the EU office in Beirut on Thursday, revealing that the current funding from the European Union and its member states for these areas has surpassed $600 million. This amount accounts for nearly half of their ongoing support to Lebanon, which currently exceeds $1 billion.
The statement highlighted that a significant portion of this funding not only aids humanitarian efforts but also bolsters vital sectors such as education, healthcare, social protection, water and sanitation, and agriculture. Additionally, it contributes to economic recovery by creating job opportunities and supporting the private sector. Further funding is also allocated to mitigate the impact of conflict on the security and stability of the country by enhancing the capabilities of the Lebanese Army and its deployment in the south.
The ambassadors reaffirmed the crucial role of UNIFIL in maintaining stability and security in the southern region, emphasizing the urgent need for all parties to fully implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which includes ensuring the state’s monopoly on weapons and adherence to ceasefire mechanisms.
They assured the President, Prime Minister, and Speaker of Parliament of the European Union and its member states’ commitment to Lebanon and their readiness to support the country on its path towards recovery.
