The United Arab Emirates is rapidly advancing towards becoming a global frontrunner in autonomous mobility, as both governmental bodies and private enterprises launch significant projects in aviation, urban transport, and road travel. From automated baggage-handling systems at Dubai’s airports to Level 4 self-driving shuttles and taxis, the nation is establishing the foundation for a smart, secure, and efficient transport future.
In a groundbreaking step for airport operations, dnata, a global provider of air and travel services, has introduced a fleet of self-driving electric baggage tractors at Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This initiative represents one of the first practical implementations of autonomous ground vehicles in a commercial airport setting worldwide, as reported by WAM.

The six EZTow autonomous tractors, engineered by TractEasy, operate on electric power and can tow up to four baggage containers at speeds reaching 15 km/h. These vehicles are currently functioning under Level 3 autonomy, permitting limited human supervision.
dnata leads the way in autonomous operations at DWC
“This deployment advances autonomous vehicles from mere testing phases to everyday airport operations,” stated Jaffar Dawood, the senior vice president of UAE Airport Operations at dnata. “As global travel rebounds and demands on operations rise, automation can be vital in developing smarter, safer, and more resilient airport infrastructure.”
Historically, airport baggage handling has been heavily reliant on human-operated vehicles, often under considerable time constraints. By automating these processes, dnata aims to optimize operations, decrease turnaround times, and improve safety on the ramp by reducing human error. This transformation enables staff to shift from operational roles to more intricate strategic functions within the airport ecosystem.
The $1.6 million project aims to achieve Level 4 autonomy—complete self-driving capability—by early 2026, allowing vehicles to operate independently within secure airside zones.
This initiative is the result of more than a year of collaboration between dnata, TractEasy, Dubai Airports, and the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). The involved parties are also working to establish regulatory guidelines for autonomous operations in airside contexts, an area still evolving in terms of global standards.
Rich Reno, CEO of TractEasy, commended the collaboration, expressing, “We are excited to collaborate with dnata, a leader in the industry, to safely set a benchmark for autonomous operations.”
This implementation by dnata is also serving as a real-time testing platform for broader autonomous ground handling applications at DWC. With plans for the airport to become the world’s largest in capacity—expected to manage 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually—implementing scalable smart infrastructure is crucial for its success.
Growth of autonomous vehicles across the UAE
In Abu Dhabi, Masdar City has initiated trials of Level 4 autonomous shuttles in collaboration with Solutions+, a smart mobility firm. These trials commenced on July 11 and are supervised by Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) to ensure all safety regulations are met.
Level 4 automation means that vehicles can operate entirely without human drivers within certain designated areas known as geofenced zones. This enhances the potential for fully driverless transportation options.
In a related endeavor in Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has formed a significant partnership with Baidu, a Chinese autonomous ride-hailing service, to introduce 50 self-driving taxis in the city by the end of 2025.
Equipped with over 40 sensors, the RT6 achieves full Level 4 autonomy and has already succeeded commercially in China. The initial focus will be on gathering data and route testing, with a target of scaling up to 1,000 vehicles over the next three years, depending on performance and user feedback.

These simultaneous initiatives—from airside operations at DWC to city-wide autonomous vehicle trials in Masdar and Dubai—illustrate the UAE’s strategic commitment to embracing advanced transportation technologies.
