Syrian President Receives Final Draft of Temporary Electoral System

Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara has received the finalized version of the temporary electoral system for the People’s Assembly. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the president emphasized the necessity of progressing towards a comprehensive process that reflects the will of the Syrian populace.

The High Elections Committee announced that it has completed the final draft of the temporary electoral system and submitted it to President Ahmad al-Shara for approval.

Committee member Hanan al-Balkhi stated that the formation of subcommittees will commence immediately after the electoral system receives official endorsement, highlighting that operational guidelines regarding candidacy procedures have been established. She reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to maintaining integrity and transparency throughout its operations.

Al-Balkhi further noted that the electoral process will proceed in line with constitutional standards and the predetermined timeline, with the electoral system designed to ensure representation from all segments of society without exclusion, as reported by SANA.

Additionally, al-Balkhi mentioned that field meetings with various segments of the Syrian population have been conducted to secure broad public participation in shaping the electoral criteria, aiming to create a new People’s Assembly that truly represents all Syrians and their aspirations for a revitalized Syria.

In a related note, the Syrian presidency announced that al-Shara officially received the final draft of the temporary electoral system on Saturday evening and directed continued efforts to ensure comprehensive participation reflecting the voice of the Syrian people.

On June 13, President Ahmad al-Shara issued Decree No. 66 for the year 2025, establishing a body called the “High Committee for the Elections of the People’s Assembly,” headed by Mohammad Taha Ahmad.

The committee includes members: Hassan Ibrahim al-Dghaim, Imad Yaqoub Barq, Lara Shaher Aizouqi, Nawar Elias Najma, Mohammad Ali Mohammad Yassin, Mohammad Khadrwili, Mohammad Yaser Kahlah, Hanan Ibrahim al-Balkhi, Badr al-Jamous, and Anas al-Abda.

The decree mandates the High Committee to supervise the formation of electing bodies responsible for electing two-thirds of the members of the People’s Assembly.

According to the decree, the assembly will consist of 150 members, distributed across provinces based on population size, and categorized into the two groups of elites and intellectuals, in accordance with the standards set by the High Elections Committee.
