A significant earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East on Wednesday, causing damage to buildings and creating tsunami waves as high as 4 meters.

Multiple injuries were reported in this remote area, and authorities anticipate strong aftershocks. The quake led to tsunami warnings and evacuation orders across the Pacific, affecting Japan, Hawaii, parts of the US West Coast, and several Southeast Asian countries.

In Kamchatka, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky International Airport experienced damage to ceiling panels, but operations resumed normally with the runway reported to be in “satisfactory condition.” Passengers were temporarily evacuated, and one individual sustained injuries at the airport.

Japan, still recovering from the impacts of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, initiated evacuations along its eastern coastline. In Hawaii, locals were seen leaving Waikiki Beach as Governor Josh Green urged residents to follow evacuation advice. Additionally, US President Donald Trump advised citizens to remain vigilant for tsunami alerts.

The Philippines and Indonesia also issued tsunami warnings. The volcanology agency in Manila predicted waves of less than 1 meter and warned residents in over 20 coastal areas to stay away from beaches. Indonesia’s meteorological agency issued alerts for regions such as North Sulawesi, North Maluku, West Papua, and Gorontalo, recommending calm and precaution without enforcing evacuations.

Tsunami warnings were issued at various levels extending to locations including China, Guam, Peru, and the Galapagos Islands near Ecuador.

The earthquake struck in one of the globe’s most seismically active regions, raising new concerns about the resilience of infrastructure and readiness for emergencies throughout the Pacific.
