The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has reiterated Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and its support for the Moroccan proposal for autonomy as the sole basis for a fair and lasting resolution to the conflict.
In a message to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on the occasion of the Throne Day, a national event symbolizing the deep bond between the monarchy and the Moroccan people, Trump confirmed that the United States acknowledges Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. He endorsed the Moroccan initiative for credible and realistic autonomy as the framework for a just and lasting solution to the issue, as reported by the Moroccan News Agency.
Expressing his congratulations on behalf of the United States to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, Trump emphasized the significant value placed on the strong and enduring partnership with Morocco.
He stated: “Together we are advancing our shared priorities for peace and security in the region, particularly by building on the Abraham Accords, combating terrorism, and enhancing trade cooperation for the benefit of both Americans and Moroccans.”
The U.S. President concluded by expressing his eagerness to continue cooperation aimed at strengthening regional stability, security, and peace.
In December 2020, the White House announced that the United States recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the entirety of Western Sahara as of that date.
At that time, a statement from the White House reaffirmed the commitment of the United States, as stated in previous administrations, to support Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only means for a fair and lasting resolution to the territorial dispute over Western Sahara.
