In line with its vision to lead globally in easy and sustainable mobility, as well as its ongoing efforts towards digital transformation and the innovation of best practices in oversight, the Roads and Transport Authority has confirmed that its new “Smart Monitoring System for Tracking the Behavior of Instructors and Trainees Using Driving School Vehicles,” launched by the Licensing Activities Control Department earlier this year, has achieved remarkable performance metrics. Over the past seven months, it has effectively monitored 1,734,790 training sessions for 245,764 trainees, representing a 14-fold increase compared to the same period last year.
The newly implemented system, which operates through the Smart Licensing Operations Center and utilizes smart displays for inspectors, has significantly reduced inspection times from 20 minutes to just one minute while increasing the number of violations observed fivefold. This makes it a comprehensive enforcement tool that enhances the quality of training services and ensures the highest safety standards.
The system utilizes technologies that allow real-time monitoring of instructors and trainees around the clock by installing smart cameras inside driving school vehicles. These include artificial intelligence (Machine Learning) and computer vision technologies, which improve oversight effectiveness during training sessions. The system automatically detects violations such as the use of mobile phones by either instructors or trainees, failure to wear seat belts, exiting designated training areas, non-compliance with uniform regulations, distractions like eating or drinking, and other behaviors that divert attention from the road.
The Roads and Transport Authority explained that the Smart Monitoring System represents a significant shift in field oversight concepts, aligning with the aspirations and vision of the Dubai government for digital transformation and innovation while fostering a safe and professional training environment that cultivates highly skilled drivers.
This year, the authority has also been working on incorporating additional innovative features into the system, including predictive analysis and the connection of actual performance outcomes for instructors with licensing and permitting systems, thus reinforcing the current regulatory framework. The authority emphasizes the importance of companies adhering to all requirements and laws to ensure a safe and effective working environment. It collaborates with all strategic partners to provide safe and reliable training services, firmly believing that maintaining compliance with safety and security standards is an integral part of its responsibilities. The new system represents a genuine opportunity to raise awareness about the significance of following laws and regulations, thereby improving performance and compliance with the required standards across all institutes.
