Iran Affirms Its Commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Tehran – Loans, Capitals – Agencies

On Monday, Iran announced that a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is set to visit Tehran within the next ten days. The Iranian government reaffirmed its commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) while expressing its refusal to activate the “snapback” mechanism proposed by European nations. Iran warned that such actions could have severe consequences for the non-proliferation system and criticized the IAEA’s performance, describing it as politically motivated. Iran called for the agency to adhere strictly to its technical responsibilities.

The head of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Committee, Ibrahim Azizi, stated that no international entity will be permitted access to Iran’s nuclear facilities, citing laws approved by the Parliament. In remarks to the Tasnim news agency, Azizi denied any resumption of inspections by the IAEA of Iranian nuclear sites.

He emphasized that the upcoming IAEA delegation’s visit to Iran is strictly limited to discussions and technical consultations with Iranian officials and experts.

He added, “The laws passed by Parliament completely prohibit the entry of any foreign delegation or entity into nuclear facilities, and inspections by this or any other delegation are not permitted.”

Azizi further stressed that “these restrictions are fixed and non-negotiable, ensuring full compliance is essential,” pointing out that the Iranian government’s agenda and the Atomic Energy Organization do not include any discussions regarding granting access to facilities or conducting inspections during this visit.

In a related development, Tehran announced the formation of a “Supreme Defense Council,” led by the President and comprising leaders of various security and military agencies, to restructure military leadership and formulate defense policies in light of challenges following the Israeli-American attack on June 12.
