Explosion of Munitions in Tyre Leads to Death of 6 Lebanese Soldiers

The Lebanese army announced yesterday the death of six soldiers and injuries to others due to an explosion that occurred while a military unit was inspecting an arms cache and working to dismantle its contents in the southern city of Tyre.

The army stated in a press release that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion. Security sources reported that the blast was the result of remnants from the Israeli war in the area.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun remarked that the nation is mourning the loss of some of its finest sons, who sacrificed their lives in defense of Lebanon’s land and sovereignty.

According to the National News Agency, Aoun spoke with Army Commander General Rudolf Hekle to learn more about the incident, which occurred in the Majdal Zoun – Wadi Zebqin area of Tyre, resulting in numerous military casualties due to the explosion of munitions during efforts by engineering troops to safely handle and deactivate them.

President Aoun expressed his sorrow over the soldiers’ deaths and extended condolences to their families and the military, wishing a swift recovery for the injured.

Additionally, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam mourned the fallen soldiers, stating on his X account: “With great pain, Lebanon mourns the gallant members of our army who fell in the south while fulfilling their national duty.”

He added that the entire nation, both state and citizens, bows in respect to their sacrifices and noble blood, reaffirming that the army is a bulwark of safety, protector of sovereignty, and guardian of national unity and legitimate institutions.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese army cautioned against jeopardizing the country’s security amidst current challenges, asserting that it will not allow any disruption of peace or threats to civil order.

The army’s Command – Directorate of Guidance released a statement on its website, noting that amid Lebanon’s current exceptional challenges, particularly ongoing Israeli attacks and violations of national sovereignty, individual calls for protests and the dissemination of manipulated videos aiming to incite tensions among Lebanese have emerged through social media.

The military urged citizens to refrain from actions that could endanger the country’s security, emphasizing that while it respects peaceful freedom of expression, it will not allow any disturbances to public order, roadblocks, or violations of public and private properties.

The army reinforced the necessity for all Lebanese and stakeholders to act responsibly during this critical time, highlighting the importance of unity and solidarity to overcome the threats facing the country.
