The Potential and Risks of AI in the Travel Industry

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a common tool in our everyday lives, its impact on how we gather and validate online information is substantial and continues to expand across various fields.

During the peak of the summer travel season, a recent study conducted by the global cybersecurity company Kaspersky reveals insights into how frequently travelers are using AI for their trip planning and how much trust they are willing to place in automated systems regarding their travel arrangements.

The survey reveals an intriguing contradiction: while AI is prevalent and generally satisfies users in travel preparation, it is not predominantly relied upon by most travelers.

Widespread Use of AI, Yet Limited Application in Travel

Kaspersky’s survey, carried out in collaboration with the research firm Toluna during the summer of 2025, included 3,000 participants from 15 different nations, including the UAE.

The results showcase AI’s strong presence among active internet users, with an impressive 88% of participants in the UAE acknowledging instance(s) of AI utilization.

However, the application of AI differs widely among various activities. The most frequent use of AI is for research (75% of respondents), followed by work (59%) and study (51%).

Entertainment (50%) and technological experimentation (42%) are also common categories. Notably, AI’s use in travel planning is relatively low, with only 36% of respondents indicating they utilize it for this purpose, despite its evident benefits.

This lower adoption rate for travel planning starkly contrasts with the overall satisfaction levels of users. A significant 99% of those who engaged AI for travel arrangements reported satisfaction, with 96% of UAE participants expressing contentment and 83% intending to do so again in the future. This suggests a promising potential for AI to enhance the travel planning process.

AI’s Role as a Research Tool for Travelers

For those travelers incorporating AI into their planning, its most favored function remains its primary strength: research.

The survey indicated that 69% of respondents employing AI for travel purposes relied on it to identify events and activities, such as excursions, tourist hotspots, and local shops.

Similar proportions—69%—used AI for accommodation selection, while 60% sought restaurant recommendations and 63% leveraged it for ticket searches.

A key trend noted was that families with children were more likely to utilize various AI functionalities in their travel preparations compared to those without children. This suggests that AI is particularly adept at assisting users with complex planning needs, allowing them to save time by automating research tasks.

Booking Challenges: Balancing Trust and Convenience

Despite its effectiveness in research applications, AI-driven booking functions saw less traction across all demographics.

The survey revealed that 51% of participants booked hotels using AI, 46% secured tickets, and only 54% made restaurant reservations with AI assistance.

Additionally, 57% of survey respondents consulted AI for inquiries related to visas and immigration. This usage raises significant concerns, particularly in light of a recent incident where an Australian author faced travel disruptions due to misleading visa advice from ChatGPT.

This highlights the dangers of AI inaccuracies, especially in critical situations where precise information is necessary.

Vladislav Tushkanov, group manager at Kaspersky’s AI Technology Research Center, commented on these observations: “We are witnessing a shift in AI’s role in resolving everyday issues. Users appreciate their time and prefer the tailored results that AI delivers.”

Tushkanov noted that, “This technology is evolving and is effectively fulfilling its promise of enhanced research and creative output.” He concluded by emphasizing the importance of user discretion in deciding how to utilize AI-generated data.

Ensuring Safe Travels in the Age of AI: Recommendations from Kaspersky

To reduce the risks linked with AI-assisted travel planning and ensure digital safety while abroad, Kaspersky suggests several essential strategies:

  • Verify Information: Always verify information provided by AI models independently before making purchases or bookings.
  • Mobile Internet Access: Explore mobile internet solutions like eSIMs for reliable connectivity while traveling internationally.
  • Caution with Wi-Fi: Always evaluate Wi-Fi networks before connecting. Employ a VPN to ensure secure browsing and avoid joining unknown hotspots automatically.
  • Protect Your Device: Never leave your devices unattended in crowded areas. Use strong passwords, and install a dependable security system to shield against cyber threats.

AI’s Significant Potential in Travel Planning

The Kaspersky survey highlights AI’s increasing integration into daily life and its significant prospects in enhancing the travel planning experience through personalized research and efficiency.

Although satisfaction among AI-utilizing travelers is remarkably high, a cautious approach is necessary, especially for vital tasks like visa applications and bookings, where potential errors could have serious repercussions.

As AI technology continues to progress, recognizing its benefits and shortcomings, along with diligent verification, is crucial for travelers seeking to harness its capabilities safely and effectively.

The study was executed by Kaspersky’s market research team in collaboration with Toluna, with 3,000 participants from 15 different countries (Argentina, Chile, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, the UK, and the UAE) taking part.
