Authorities in Portugal have reported that 1,331 individuals lost their lives due to the intense heatwave that affected the country from July 27 to August 15. This marks a significant rise in fatalities, with an increase of 25% during this period.
According to official statistics, the most vulnerable demographic was those aged over 75, as the extreme temperatures exacerbated their chronic health conditions, particularly heart and respiratory diseases.
The northern, central, and southern Alentejo regions of Portugal experienced the highest rates of heat-related deaths, as noted by the news network Euronews.
