European-Iranian Discussions on ‘Nuclear’ Scheduled for Next Week

In a recent development concerning Iran’s nuclear program, Tehran has announced a meeting with European officials scheduled for next week. While Paris has issued a warning that time is running out to achieve a negotiated solution, Berlin emphasized the need for serious Iranian engagement to avoid the reactivation of sanctions.

Iran has revealed plans for an upcoming meeting between its diplomats and representatives from the UK, France, and Germany to discuss its nuclear ambitions, as these three European nations threaten to reinstate sanctions against Tehran.

A statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry followed a phone call between Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and high-ranking European diplomats, indicating that discussions will continue with the three European countries and the European Union at a ministerial level on Tuesday.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry highlighted that the foreign ministers from the three European nations reiterated their strategy aimed at preventing the activation of the sanctions mechanism, which is intended to grant additional time for diplomacy.

Araqchi stated that Tehran will not engage in this pathway but will consult with its allies in the United Nations Security Council regarding its implications. Additionally, a report from the Telegram channel Sinergy indicated that two members of the Iranian delegation met with the Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna yesterday to discuss the future of cooperation between Iran and the agency.

Time Is of the Essence

The French Foreign Minister noted that time is pressing for reaching a negotiated resolution regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Jean-Yves Le Drian stated this after a phone conversation with his British and German counterparts and the EU’s foreign policy chief.

He remarked that he had a very important call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi regarding the nuclear program and the potential sanctions on Iran, which they are preparing to reinstate. He stressed that time is limited and that a new meeting on this matter is scheduled for next week.

Avoiding Sanctions

German Foreign Minister Johan Faddevoll stated following the talks that Europe remains committed to diplomacy but emphasized that time is running out for the nuclear discussions, urging Iran to engage constructively. He posted:

“Time is extremely short, and Iran must actively participate to avoid the activation of the sanctions reinstatement mechanism. We have made it clear that we will not allow the sanctions mechanism to lapse unless a verifiable and sustainable agreement is achieved.”

He also noted that the Europeans have tasked their officials to meet with their Iranian counterparts next week. Furthermore, Kalas pointed out that Iran’s willingness to engage with the U.S. is critical as the deadline for the sanctions reactivation approaches.
