The Dubai Police have successfully prevented the theft of a rare pink diamond valued at $25 million during an operation dubbed ‘Operation Pink Diamond’. They managed to recover the precious stone before it could be illegally exported from the country.
Investigations revealed that the criminal group had been planning the theft for over a year, specifically targeting a diamond certified by a respected gemological institute with a purity rating so unique that the likelihood of finding another similar gem is just 0.01 percent.
The Criminal Plot
The suspects, all of Asian descent, crafted a complex scheme to mislead the diamond’s owner, a jeweler, by pretending to be affluent buyers interested in purchasing the jewel.
They rented high-end vehicles, hosted meetings in luxurious hotels, and even enlisted a prominent diamond expert to validate the stone, thus portraying an appearance of trustworthiness and legitimacy.
Their ultimate aim was to convince the jeweler to take the diamond out of his secure store. After luring the jeweler to a villa under the pretense of meeting a ‘buyer’, the gang attempted to seize the stone.
Police Intervention
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Dubai Police employed advanced technology to monitor and identify the three suspects, who initially lived together but separated to different locations following the crime.
A specialized task force executed simultaneous raids on their various hideouts, capturing the suspects and retrieving the diamond before it could be smuggled out of Dubai, where it was concealed in a small refrigerator destined for an Asian country.
The reclaimed pink diamond is classified as ‘Fancy Intense’, weighing 21.25 carats, and is noted for its remarkable clarity, symmetry, and excellent polish. Its exceptional rarity and value made it an attractive target, leading to the gang’s elaborate year-long preparations.
Jeweler Commends Police Response
The owner of the diamond expressed his appreciation for the prompt and effective actions of the Dubai Police. He shared that he immediately called 999 after the theft occurred, stating:
“Multiple patrols arrived within minutes, commenced the investigation, and provided continuous reassurance.
I was shocked when, the very next morning, they informed me that the suspects had been apprehended and the diamond recovered.”
Operating in Dubai since 2005, the jeweler admitted being taken aback by the plot, underlining the importance of following the emirate’s safety protocols in the diamond trading industry:
“Dubai has established itself as a secure global hub for the diamond trade. It’s crucial that we maintain the standards that allow for that.”
‘Operation Pink Diamond’ not only successfully recovered one of the world’s rarest gemstones but also reinforced Dubai’s reputation as a safe haven for high-value goods.
This operation underscores the city’s strong law enforcement capabilities and its proactive approach to safeguarding investors and merchants within the luxury market.
