The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has recently shared insights into its innovative Automated Railway Infrastructure Inspection System (ARIIS), which utilizes advanced AI technology to improve metro maintenance and inspections.
This robotic platform represents a significant advancement in the use of artificial intelligence within public transportation, enhancing safety and operational efficiency while greatly minimizing the need for manual inspection.

Technology Overview
ARIIS functions autonomously, featuring high-resolution 3D cameras, laser scanners, and sophisticated sensors. It primarily operates during nighttime maintenance periods, conducting detailed inspections of metro tracks and infrastructure without interrupting passenger service.
As ARIIS traverses the network, it gathers extensive data pertaining to track conditions such as wear, cracks, and structural anomalies. This information is analyzed using cutting-edge AI algorithms to facilitate predictive maintenance. The system not only identifies existing issues but also predicts potential future problems, empowering maintenance teams to take preventive actions.
This proactive strategy significantly prolongs the lifespan of metro infrastructure, minimizes expensive emergency repairs, and reduces routine maintenance costs by as much as 25 percent.
Impressive Efficiency Metrics
Since its launch, ARIIS has achieved impressive efficiency improvements. Inspection durations have been cut by 75 percent, resulting in approximately 1,700 hours saved in human labor. Standard inspection tasks have seen a reduction of 70 percent, while the speed and accuracy of condition evaluations have improved by 40 percent.
The RTA has also noted that ARIIS has enhanced maintenance resource allocation by 40 percent, facilitated by the system’s real-time data analytics, which foster more informed, data-driven decisions.
These enhancements not only lower costs but also improve the overall safety and dependability of the Dubai Metro network, benefiting both daily commuters and operational teams.
The Future of ARIIS
Currently implemented on select metro lines, ARIIS is gradually being rolled out across the entire network. The RTA has stated that full implementation will commence following successful technical assessments.
In the future, the authority is exploring opportunities to apply similar AI technologies to other public transportation systems, such as the Dubai Tram, pending infrastructure compatibility.
All inspections conducted by ARIIS adhere to stringent occupational safety protocols and are centrally coordinated to ensure smooth integration with ongoing metro operations.
