On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that there is “a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel” in the relationship between Russia and the United States.
During his visit to a nuclear research center, Putin expressed confidence that the leadership qualities of President Donald Trump will contribute to restoring ties that had recently reached a historic low.
Referring to last week’s summit, he noted, “With Trump in office, I believe a glimmer of hope has finally appeared at the end of the tunnel. We recently held a productive and candid meeting in Alaska.”
He further remarked, “The next steps now depend on U.S. leadership, but I am optimistic that the current president’s leadership qualities will serve as a strong foundation for restoring our relationship.”
Putin also highlighted that Moscow is discussing joint projects with the United States in the Arctic and Alaska.
Details about these discussions were not elaborated upon.
Both Russia and the United States have expressed optimism about significant economic opportunities if their relations were to normalize, following a period of severe deterioration due to Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
