German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for the election of a woman as President of the Federal Republic in 2027. During an open house event at the German government’s headquarters in Berlin on Sunday, Merz stated, “I envision that Germany should elect a woman as President in 2027, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.”
Merz made this remark in response to a question from a citizen. It is worth noting that the current President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will conclude his second and final term in March 2027.
He further explained that his personal choice for the candidacy of politician Julia Klöckner for the position of Speaker of the Parliament is part of his commitment to enhancing the representation of women in high-level leadership roles in the country.
Merz leads the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), to which Klöckner belongs. The CDU, along with its Bavarian counterpart, the Christian Social Union (CSU), forms what is known as the Christian Union, the largest party in Germany’s ruling coalition, which also includes the Social Democratic Party.
