Heavy rainfall in the southern and eastern coastal regions of Yemen over the past few days has resulted in casualties, significant loss of life, and widespread material damage, accompanied by warnings of continuing atmospheric disturbances in the coming days.
In “Aden,” persistent heavy rains have flooded streets, hindering traffic in various neighborhoods, raising concerns about rising water levels and potential damage to residential areas due to flash floods. This situation is exacerbated by fragile infrastructure and inadequate drainage systems.
In “Shabwa,” fatalities have been reported due to flash flooding; two individuals died in the Um Athaym area of the Aysalan district after being swept away by rushing waters. In the Beihan district, two children drowned while swimming in a water pool formed by the rains in the Al-Jidfara region.
In “Hadhramaut,” a young man drowned in a deep pool left by the floods in the Al-Suwari area of the Tarim district, while heavy rains continued in other parts of the governorate, causing local flooding and scattered damage.
Weather centers have warned of the ongoing impact of the atmospheric disturbance on Yemen’s southern and eastern coastlines in the upcoming days, predicting additional rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. They have urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid areas prone to flooding and water accumulation.
These developments come amidst a backdrop of weakened infrastructure in Yemeni cities due to years of conflict, which intensifies the risk associated with floods and rainfall, amplifying the damage to both public and private property.
