The final statement of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit called for enhanced exchanges and collaboration with the United Nations, along with the introduction of a proposal to advance a trade facilitation agreement within the organization.
The concluding statement from the summit, held in Tianjin, northern China, condemned the Israeli military actions in Gaza and advocated for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire.
It also criticized Israel’s attacks on Iran that occurred in June.
Furthermore, the statement warned against the reinterpretation of a UN Security Council resolution supporting the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, following European powers’ activation of a mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions on Tehran. It emphasized that any attempts to misinterpret or arbitrarily define the resolution would undermine the authority of the Security Council.
The statement notably omitted any mention of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
During the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin both expressed strong criticism of the West.
Xi Jinping called for a just global system, criticized Cold War mentalities, and challenged the blocs and intimidation tactics employed by certain nations, implicitly referring to the USA. Meanwhile, Putin attributed the responsibility for the Ukraine war to the West.
He remarked, “This crisis did not arise from a Russian attack on Ukraine but was triggered by a coup in Ukraine that was supported and caused by the West.”
He continued, stating that “the second reason is the West’s persistent attempts to draw Ukraine into NATO.”
