On the occasion of Emirati Women’s Day, I reflect with deep pride on my journey as an Emirati woman and the endless possibilities that await us. This day serves as a powerful symbol of vision, progress, resilience, and the support of our community, fitting perfectly with this year’s theme, ‘Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years’—a significant commemoration of the 50 years since the inception of the General Women’s Union in 1975.
Emirati Women’s Day holds great importance as it highlights the extraordinary accomplishments of Emirati women from various backgrounds, recognizing their vital roles in our nation’s prosperity and its international stature. This day is dedicated to honoring both the pioneers who came before us and the everyday champions that reflect our national spirit, as well as the innovators who are paving our future.
The empowerment of women is closely linked to the visionary leadership that has steered the UAE since its foundation. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE, firmly believed in the abilities of women, a conviction that has remained a guiding principle in recognizing women as essential partners in our national success.
Empowerment through education
Education stands at the core of this empowering journey. The UAE’s steadfast dedication to advancing women’s education has been instrumental in its overall development. The establishment of Al Zahra, the first girls’ school in Sharjah in 1952, marked the beginning of a new era, nurturing groundbreaking Emirati women like Dr. Ayesha Al Sayyar, the first female UAE doctorate holder and former Deputy Minister of Educational Activities.
This foundational commitment to education has been further championed by HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known as the ‘Mother of the Nation.’ Her relentless advocacy for women’s education and rights has laid the groundwork for the advancement of women in the UAE, including her crucial role in initiating Emirati Women’s Day.
The establishment of Zayed University in 1998 represented another significant step in promoting the development of Emirati women. This commitment to education has broadened opportunities, enriching the perspectives of countless Emirati women and preparing them for success on the global stage.
Breaking career barriers
Today, the impact of Emirati women across various sectors is unmistakable. From government to private businesses, from STEM fields to the flourishing tourism sector and vibrant arts and culture, Emirati women are making significant strides.
Trailblazers such as Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi—the first Emirati woman to hold a ministerial position as Minister of Economy in 2004—and Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi, the first woman elected to the UAE’s Federal National Council in 2006 and its president in 2015, are leading innovations that enhance economic growth and influence policy development.
We are witnessing a remarkable transformation as Emirati women showcase exceptional leadership in roles that were once considered out of reach, including prestigious global positions. A notable instance is the recent appointment of Sheikha Nasser Al Nowais as the first female secretary-general of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), highlighting the global recognition of Emirati women’s leadership capabilities.
Mentorship and support systems
The importance of mentorship is paramount. Learning from the experiences of those who have overcome challenges enriches our understanding and allows us to reach our potential. In addition, the supportive societal and familial structures within the UAE, along with progressive government initiatives, create a conducive environment for women to pursue their dreams. The focus on work-life balance, availability of childcare services, and cultural respect for women’s diverse roles all foster an atmosphere where professional ambitions can thrive alongside personal responsibilities.
As an Emirati woman, my commitment to nurturing talent at Miral and creating an environment conducive to success is deeply meaningful. Witnessing individuals flourish and knowing that their unique talents and diverse outlooks are crucial to our collective progress brings immense satisfaction; guiding them on their respective journeys is a privilege.
The path to progress is ongoing. With the steadfast support of our leadership, the strength of our community, and the innate drive of Emirati women, the possibilities are limitless. Together, as we move forward, I hope to continue contributing to a future where every Emirati woman can fully realize her potential and enhance a nation that stands as a symbol of growth and opportunity for everyone.
