Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for discussions regarding Hezbollah’s arms ahead of an anticipated government meeting to review a plan devised by the military for the disarmament of the group.
Following several months of devastating conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, and under significant U.S. pressure, the Lebanese government tasked the military with creating a strategy to disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year.
Berri stated, “We reiterate our openness to discuss the fate of this weaponry, which represents our pride and dignity as Lebanon, in the context of a calm and consensus-driven dialogue.”
The Lebanese Cabinet is scheduled to convene on Friday to review the military’s proposal.
Berri criticized the government’s actions that are based on a U.S. document, stating, “The propositions outlined in the American paper go beyond the principle of weapon monopoly, as if they replace the agreement from November.
