The Nepalese army has extended the curfew imposed in the capital region until 6 AM local time (0015 GMT) tomorrow, Thursday, following violent protests that erupted in chaos.
On Wednesday, plumes of smoke were seen rising from government buildings and private offices that had been set ablaze.
After hours of rioting and looting stemming from the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, the army announced late Tuesday that it had regained control as of 10 PM local time in coordination with other security agencies.
What began as demonstrations against the ban on social media and corruption has escalated into nearly complete chaos across Nepal.
Hundreds of offices and homes have been set on fire throughout Kathmandu, with some structures still ablaze today.
Nepalese police spokesperson Binod Jimire reported that at least two police officers were killed on Tuesday.
He added, “We have received reports confirming the deaths of two officers, and details will be publicized upon completion of the investigation.”
At least five fatalities occurred during clashes at a detention facility in western Nepal last night, according to DSP Deepak Pathali from the Banke police department. This brings the total death toll from the protests to 27.
Police officials noted that officers abandoned their posts targeted by protesters, making crime reporting nearly impossible.
