Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Humanitarian City has initiated an urgent airlift to Afghanistan in response to the devastating earthquake that occurred last week.
The shipment was organized in collaboration with several humanitarian partners, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot administered by the World Food Programme, and UNICEF.
The aircraft departed from Dubai this morning, heading to Kabul, carrying approximately 84 tons of emergency supplies such as medical equipment, shelter materials, and other relief items valued at around 3.4 million dirhams (approximately 920,000 USD). This assistance is expected to alleviate the suffering of over 730,000 people affected by the natural disaster.
Giuseppe Saba, Executive Director and Board Member of Dubai Humanitarian City, stated, “Dubai Humanitarian City was established to empower the international humanitarian community to respond swiftly and effectively during crises. Following the recent earthquake in Afghanistan, we quickly coordinated with international humanitarian organizations to assess field needs and prioritize the provision of essential relief items.”
He continued, “This shipment exemplifies our collective commitment to support the Afghan people during these challenging times. Under the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, we continue to reinforce Dubai’s position as a global hub for preparedness and response, enabling international relief partners to unite efforts in addressing natural disasters and humanitarian crises. This mission reiterates the UAE’s unwavering dedication to its positive humanitarian role on the global stage.
