The U.S. authorities apprehended approximately 12 officials from the New York State Assembly, along with other elected local representatives, during demonstrations at a building in Manhattan. This site is overseen by immigration and customs officials who have faced criticism from a federal judge regarding inhumane detention conditions.
New York City Comptroller Brad Lander and ten state lawmakers were detained inside the “26 Federal Plaza” building after they were denied access to the tenth floor to inspect the detention facilities there.
According to protest organizers, the group attended to ensure compliance with a recent court order mandating the immigration and customs department to improve the treatment of detainees.
City Public Defender Jumaane Williams led another group of dozens of demonstrators opposing immigration policies, blocking the entrance to the building’s garage while sitting on the sidewalk with signs and chanting “Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here.”
Organizers reported that city police and federal officials collectively arrested more than 75 individuals. However, Trisha McLaughlin, an officer from the Department of Homeland Security, stated that the total number was 71.
This incident marks the latest conflict between federal authorities and Democratic politicians who are critical of the immigration policies implemented by President Donald Trump.
In June, Lander had been detained in the same building while accompanying a man that immigration authorities were attempting to arrest.
The 84-page court order highlighted complaints regarding unsanitary and overcrowded conditions, noting that as many as 90 detainees are crammed into a room measuring 20 square meters and are forced to sleep on concrete floors, if they can find space to lie down.
