This shift not only emphasizes environmental responsibility but also presents significant business opportunities. Instead of being regarded as waste, decommissioned aircraft are now seen as valuable resources; essential components are extracted, thoroughly inspected, and restored to a condition comparable to new.
Engines play a critical role in this transformation, being the most valuable components of the aircraft. In many instances, a second-hand engine in good condition is worth more than the aircraft it came from. These engines can be transferred to different aircraft or included in leasing pools, significantly prolonging their usability. A retired engine from one airline may become an affordable upgrade for another.

This approach is no longer an obscure concept. Airlines, operating in a budget-sensitive, post-pandemic environment, are maximizing their assets longer than ever before, relying on trustworthy partners to assist with this. The costs associated with new aircraft are continually rising, with models like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 now exceeding $100 million; meanwhile, global supply chain challenges have made new deliveries more unpredictable.
This has subsequently led to a surge in demand for used serviceable materials (USM). The process of reusing or refurbishing engine components within OEM specifications can be 20 to 40 percent more economical than purchasing new parts. Airlines and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) providers are increasingly aware of this trend, as are investors.
Additionally, regulatory bodies and sustainability-minded investors are pushing the aviation sector to take greater accountability beyond merely addressing flight emissions. The industry’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 necessitates a thorough reevaluation, whereby circular economy practices play a crucial role. The European Union’s advocacy for a circular economy, which includes stricter regulations on aircraft dismantling and waste management, indicates that this shift is supported by policy changes. Companies that adapt proactively to these developments will not only remain compliant but will also emerge as leaders.
