Sharjah Ruler Expresses Condolences on the Passing of Sultan Bin Khalid Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi

In line with its strategic aim to modernize the services and facilities of religious sites, Saudi Arabia is significantly transforming the experience for millions of worshippers visiting the Two Holy Mosques and related pilgrimage locations.

By harnessing advanced technologies, efficient operations, and comprehensive awareness initiatives, various Saudi authorities are collaborating to provide a smarter, safer, and more spiritually fulfilling journey for pilgrims from across the globe.

Creating a Digitally Unified Pilgrimage Environment

Central to this initiative is the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, which has launched a strong, digitally unified strategy aimed at enhancing service delivery and ensuring smooth accessibility for worshippers. By establishing a cohesive digital environment with sophisticated systems and a skilled workforce, the authority strives to elevate service quality, productivity, and the overall user experience.

In the Islamic year 1446 AH, the authority introduced an impressive array of multilingual digital materials, including 217,000 translated words, 2,512 digital pages, and 240 visual and audio resources in seven languages. These offerings cater to the diverse global pilgrim community and provide spiritual guidance in easily accessible formats, according to a report by the Saudi Press Agency.

Complementing this effort are eight digital services utilized by over 3.6 million visitors, encompassing everything from booking platforms to tools for enhancing experiences and channels for visitor feedback.

Additionally, 1.2 million worshippers benefited from five seasonal digital services facilitating applications for itikaf, iftar, seasonal job permits, and access to vital religious content like the Arafah sermon.

Throughout this period, the authority processed 12,723 seasonal reports, demonstrating its dedication to real-time operational responsiveness and ongoing enhancement.

Enhancing Operational Framework with Institutional Systems

To underpin these digital services, the authority has established a solid foundation of eight institutional systems, including platforms for volunteering, technical support, internal communications, and project management. These systems are in line with overarching smart government objectives and integrate with national platforms such as Nusuk and Tawakkalna, improving data governance and the overall experience for pilgrims.

A significant advancement in this area is the installation of computer vision and crowd management systems, supported by 2,500 cameras and five sophisticated monitoring systems, which facilitate real-time crowd monitoring and proactive safety measures during peak times.

As the digital presence of holy sites grows, the necessity for robust data protection also increases. Accordingly, the authority has put into place nine advanced cybersecurity systems, guided by 17 technical and operational standards, coupled with 13 comprehensive policies for policy enforcement and digital process regulation.

Three contingency plans have been crafted to counter digital threats and emergencies, ensuring business continuity. Moreover, 19 formal policies have been adopted and disseminated to protect the integrity and reliability of digital services provided to millions of users worldwide.

Infrastructure Improvements for Better Pilgrim Access

Alongside digital enhancements, substantial investments are being made in physical infrastructure. The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites (RCMC) is leading the renovation of Miqats, the sacred entry points where pilgrims enter the state of Ihram for Hajj or Umrah.

During the 1446 AH Hajj season, enhanced operational planning cut down pilgrim waiting times from 80 minutes to just 39 minutes while achieving a 100% response rate to visitor feedback and a 99% satisfaction score. These results highlight RCMC’s commitment to efficiency and user-oriented design.

Current projects focus on redesigning Miqat Qarn Al Manazil, optimizing traffic flow, enlarging prayer areas, and modernizing facilities. Upgrades to Miqat Wadi Muharram are aimed at improving infrastructure, visual appeal, and accessibility via major transport routes.

“These initiatives stem from a broader vision to enhance service delivery, secure long-term sustainability, and maintain the Islamic architectural charm of these sacred sites,” remarked Eng. Saleh Al Rasheed, CEO of RCMC.

National Awareness Initiatives Foster Spiritual Engagement

Supporting these modernization efforts is a comprehensive religious awareness campaign initiated by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance in Madinah for the 1447 AH Umrah season. This campaign aims to provide spiritual, intellectual, and logistical resources for the millions of pilgrims expected to attend.

The initiative includes over 80,000 activities encompassing 13 major programs, four training courses, two forums, and five intellectual projects. Conducted in mosques and Islamic centers across various governorates in Madinah, these programs are designed to instill values of moderation, balance, and authentic Islamic teachings.

A suite of digital tools, including e-books, sermons, academic lessons, and lectures, will accompany translators and interactive awareness booths to ensure accessibility, especially for international pilgrims who may face language or cultural barriers.

A Unified Vision for Future Pilgrimage

These interconnected initiatives, which include sophisticated digital ecosystems, fortified cybersecurity, improved infrastructure, and widespread awareness campaigns, are fundamentally reshaping the future of religious pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. By merging technology with tradition and efficiency with compassion, the Kingdom is delivering an enhanced, secure, and spiritually fulfilling experience to millions of worshippers while positioning itself as a global benchmark for innovation in large-scale religious services.

As interest in pilgrimage continues to rise, Saudi Arabia’s proactive investments in digital infrastructure, operational frameworks, and spiritual education are not only addressing current challenges but also preparing for the future of worship.
