Trump Asks Supreme Court for Immediate Removal of Federal Reserve Board Member
President Donald Trump has urged the Supreme Court to urgently intervene and remove a member of the Federal Reserve Board from her position.
The Trump administration turned to the Supreme Court after a federal appeals court declined to grant the request for the removal of Lael Brainard, a member appointed by the previous Democratic president, Joe Biden. This decision marks a significant challenge to the Federal Reserve’s independence from executive influence, as Trump aims to reshape the seven-member board.
The White House’s effort to remove Brainard represents an unprecedented bid to alter the Federal Reserve, an institution designed to operate largely free from daily political pressures. In its over 112-year history, no sitting president has ever dismissed a current board member.
Brainard has firmly stated that she will not step down and will not submit to what she describes as Trump’s intimidation tactics.
Her lawyer, Abbe Lowell, emphasized that Brainard intends to continue fulfilling her responsibilities as a member of the Federal Reserve Board, as confirmed during her Senate confirmation process.
