Lavrov: Russia Will Respond to Any Aggression and There Is No Justification for Killing Civilians in Gaza

As new tensions mount between Russia and NATO forces, a senior Russian diplomat emphasized during a speech to world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly that Russia has no intention of invading Europe but will respond with a “decisive” reaction to any aggression.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke at a time when unauthorized flights of fighter jets and drones in NATO airspace, which Russia has been blamed for, have sparked concern in Europe in recent weeks. This comes after NATO fighters intercepted drones over Poland and Estonia reported that Russian aircraft had entered its airspace for 12 minutes.

Russia denied that its planes had breached Estonian airspace and stated that the drones were not targeting Poland. Additionally, Belarus, an ally of Moscow, claimed that Ukrainian signal interference caused the drones to veer off course.

European leaders view these incidents as deliberate provocations aimed at testing NATO’s response. NATO has warned Russia this week that it will utilize all means necessary to defend against any further intrusions into its airspace.

During the UN session, Lavrov insisted that it is Russia that faces threats.

He stated: “Russia has never had and will never have any intentions of attacking European countries or NATO members. However, any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response. There should be no doubt about this among those in NATO and the European Union.”

Lavrov’s remarks came three years into the war in Ukraine, which has been widely condemned by the international community, amid new statements from a powerful member indicating that Ukraine is capable of repelling the attack.

While addressing the devastating war in Gaza, Lavrov condemned the surprise attack launched by Hamas militants on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, but asserted that there was “no justification” for Israel’s killing of Palestinian civilians, including children.

He also indicated that there is no basis for any potential Israeli annexation of the West Bank, which Palestinians consider a crucial part of their future state, alongside Gaza and East Jerusalem.

Although Israel has not announced such a step, several prominent members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government have called for it. Recently, officials approved a controversial settlement project that would effectively divide the West Bank, a move critics argue could obliterate prospects for a Palestinian state.

Lavrov noted that between the Gaza conflict and the situation in the West Bank, “we are essentially dealing with an attempt to create a sort of coup aimed at burying UN resolutions on the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

The international community has long supported a “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, Netanyahu opposes the idea of a Palestinian state, claiming it would reward Hamas—a stance he reiterated during the General Assembly on Friday.
