The United Nations has reinstated sanctions against Iran early on Sunday morning due to concerns over its nuclear program, intensifying the pressure on Tehran, where the population is increasingly struggling to access essential food supplies and worrying about the future.
Following a breakdown in last-minute diplomatic efforts at the UN, these sanctions officially took effect on Sunday at 00:00 GMT.
These measures will once again freeze Iranian assets abroad, halt arms deals with the nation, and impose penalties on any advancements in Iran’s ballistic missile program, among other actions. This comes under a mechanism known as “snapback,” which is part of the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers.
Iran has asserted that the UN lacks the authority to reapply these sanctions and claimed that they will not impact the country. However, the reinstatement of these sanctions follows a 12-day conflict waged by Israel against Iran in June, which included U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
