NATO Strengthens Its Presence in the Baltic Following Drone Incursions in Denmark

NATO announced on Saturday that it will be strengthening its mission in the Baltic Sea with the addition of an air defense frigate and other resources in response to drone incursions in Denmark.

Earlier today, the Danish military reported spotting unidentified drones near military installations in Denmark during the night, following multiple drone incursions that occurred near airports and critical infrastructure last week.

Copenhagen Airport, the busiest in the Nordic region, was temporarily closed for several hours on Monday after several large drones were detected in its airspace. Additionally, five other Danish airports were briefly shut down in the subsequent days.

In response, NATO issued a statement via email to Reuters, confirming that it will “enhance preparedness with new multi-domain assets in the Baltic Sea region.”

The alliance specified that the new resources will include “platforms for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, as well as at least one air defense frigate.”

A NATO spokesperson indicated that specific details regarding which countries will contribute these additional assets will not be disclosed.

The new assets will bolster the “Baltic Guardian” mission initiated by NATO in January, which was in reaction to a string of incidents damaging power cables, communication lines, and gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

Member countries of the alliance have deployed frigates, reconnaissance aircraft, and unmanned naval units as part of this mission to safeguard vital infrastructure.
