36 Dead and 50 Injured in Stampede in India Triggered by Movie Star

At least 36 people lost their lives in a stampede that occurred in southern India on Saturday during an election rally featuring film star-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, according to local officials.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian of Tamil Nadu informed the Associated Press that the victims passed away before reaching the hospital. He added that more than 50 individuals injured in the incident are currently in stable condition.

Vijay was addressing attendees at the gathering in the Karur district when the chaos erupted, prompting him to halt his speech.

The Hindustan Times reported that a significant portion of the crowd, eager to catch a glimpse of Vijay, surged towards the barriers surrounding the stage, which led to the tragic stampede.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident in a statement, calling it “extremely tragic.” He extended his condolences to the families who lost loved ones and wished them strength during this difficult time.
