On Saturday, the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, Badr Abdel Atti, met with Ahmed Attaf, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad. This meeting took place during the high-level segment of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the two ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation. They expressed a mutual desire to hold the ninth session of the Joint Higher Committee in Cairo soon, which would help advance economic and developmental collaboration, while also welcoming the exchange of expertise and learning from each other’s developmental and infrastructural experiences.
Minister Abdel Atti emphasized the readiness of Egyptian companies to engage in development projects in Algeria, aiming to benefit both nations’ peoples.
Regionally, Abdel Atti reiterated his condemnation of the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip and the serious violations occurring in the West Bank, underlining the urgent need for an immediate and comprehensive halt to military operations, ensuring unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, and rallying international efforts to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The meeting also addressed the evolving situation in Libya, given its proximity to both Egypt and Algeria, with the minister stressing the importance of supporting a Libyan-led solution. This includes conducting presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently as soon as possible and the exit of all foreign troops and mercenaries from Libya, in line with the aspirations of the Libyan people.
Abdel Atti highlighted the significance of regular meetings of the trilateral mechanism involving the neighboring countries of Libya, which includes Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia, as a means to foster stability and uphold the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Libya.
Additionally, the Egyptian minister praised Algeria’s role during its non-permanent membership in the Security Council and discussed issues on the Council’s agenda aimed at bolstering efforts for international peace and security.
