The administration of President Donald Trump has requested the Supreme Court to uphold his directive concerning birthright citizenship, which asserts that children born to parents residing in the United States illegally or on a temporary basis are not considered American citizens.
This appeal, reviewed by the Associated Press on Saturday, initiates proceedings in the Supreme Court that may lead to a definitive ruling by the justices by early summer regarding the constitutionality of these citizenship restrictions.
So far, judges in lower courts have prevented the enforcement of these restrictions anywhere in the country. The Republican administration is not asking the Supreme Court to allow the application of these rules before a ruling is made.
