Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, the Minister of Foreign Trade, has emphasized that the Union Train project significantly bolsters the United Arab Emirates’ position as a global logistics hub. This initiative will enhance the country’s role on the global trade map by facilitating the flow of goods and services across the region, thanks to its vital connections between the nation’s ports, industrial zones, and free trade areas.
This statement was made during a trial passenger service journey aboard the Union Train, where Minister Al Zeyoudi rode from the Al Qudra area in Dubai to Fujairah, accompanied by Shadi Malek, the CEO of Etihad Rail, and the team involved.
Alongside its freight capabilities, which are projected to exceed 60 million tons annually by 2030, the passenger service—set to commence commercial operations in 2026—will be an essential component of the integrated transport network in the UAE. It aims to facilitate travel and support various economic sectors, including services throughout the country.
Dr. Al Zeyoudi reaffirmed the critical role that the Union Train project will play in transforming the movement of goods, people, and services within the nation.
He stated, “The launch of the Union Train’s passenger services will be a pivotal step in our efforts to expand and develop the national transport network. This monumental project will expedite the transportation of goods and passengers between industrial areas and ports, enhancing connectivity across the country, thereby supporting sustainable economic development while reducing harmful emissions.”
Shadi Malek, the CEO of Etihad Rail, expressed, “We were pleased to host Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi and showcase the passenger service of the Union Train, marking a new phase in the journey of Etihad Rail, under the visionary leadership of Sheikh Diab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the company. This project reflects Etihad Rail’s commitment to advancing an integrated transport system that enhances interconnectivity between the Emirates and supports the transition toward a more sustainable and efficient future in mobility.”
Once operational, the passenger service will connect 11 cities, stretching from the western edge of the country to Fujairah on the eastern coast, improving accessibility to key destinations and alleviating traffic congestion on major roads.
The trains are expected to accommodate up to 400 passengers, with projected ridership anticipated to reach 36.5 million annually by 2030.
As preparations for the official service launch next year continue, this project reflects the UAE’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that strengthens connectivity and propels regional integration, alongside the nation’s goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Union Train network spans 900 kilometers, covering various regions and connecting Ghweifat to Fujairah. It plays a crucial role in servicing key ports, including Khalifa Port, Jebel Ali Port, and Ruwais Port, by facilitating efficient cargo movement from major entry points to industrial areas and enabling the transit of industrial production to critical nodes in global supply chains.
With an expected annual capacity of 60 million tons by 2030, the railway system is set to make a significant logistical shift in the local freight sector, greatly enhancing the UAE’s promising capabilities in the goods and services trade.
