Two Heavy Themes: The Gaza War Mobilized the World Without Movement

Words fail to describe the devastating conflict that has ravaged Gaza over the past two years. Terms such as war, massacre, genocide, destruction, displacement, and cleansing have all been exhausted, leaving no vocabulary to discuss the atrocities that have unfolded: missiles, drones, shells, airstrikes—all have been overused.

Gaza has faced numerous conflicts, but the current battle, which began on October 7, 2023, is unlike any other. Entire neighborhoods have been laid to waste, streets reduced to piles of rubble, and an atmosphere of terror and despair permeates the landscape. The death toll has soared, with over 67,000 residents of the enclave killed and around 170,000 injured.

The toll of war has left Gaza’s inhabitants battered, with trees stripped bare and buildings demolished. Families have been displaced, their tents torn apart by relentless bombing, and survivors suffer the consequences of ongoing shelling, transforming shock into a constant background noise. The world has stirred in response, yet it has remained motionless for nearly two years.

Children, women, men, and the elderly have been repeatedly forced to flee, sometimes shivering in the freezing cold, other times sweating under the blazing sun. Elders lament the plight of Gaza, while tears remain frozen in their eyes; the cemeteries can no longer accommodate the mounting number of casualties. Hospitals, overwhelmed, are unable to treat the injured, and residents are reduced to foraging for leaves and lining up at soup kitchens for a sip of water or a bowl of broth.

The pervasive darkness of Gaza intensifies amidst the shadows of war, with smoke from airstrikes choking the sky and political pathways remaining blocked. As night blends indistinguishably into day, Gaza’s residents find themselves devoid of words to express their plight. All appeals for an end to the frenzy of violence—deemed by Israel as a means of collective punishment against defenseless civilians—have proved futile, ignored by global governing bodies.

This report sheds light on the tragedies experienced by the people of Gaza, where daily casualties continue to rise, sometimes by the dozens or even hundreds. Survivors of the first round of bombings find themselves waiting for the next, living in a constant cycle of dread. Witnessing the aftermath of war, displaced resident Wissam Al-Najjar describes the current state of Gaza: “What is the condition our people have reached? We are tired of displacement, of seeking mere survival, existing in a daily cycle of violence where Israeli fighter jets indiscriminately target refugee camps with sheer brutality.”

He continues, “The people of Gaza have exhausted all solutions on earth; our only hope lies with divine intervention. Everyone here prays for a miracle, hoping to finally see an end to this nightmare as all international organizations fail to compel Israel to cease its relentless assault.”

“For the past two years, we have tasted neither comfort nor life, just waves of displaced families passing by, the deafening roar of aircraft overhead, and the stench of death in the air. All we await is the announcement of a ceasefire.”

No Schools, No Hospitals

Displaced resident Salem Alyan recounts horrifying experiences of searching for food amidst the chaos: “Some days, we lose 80 to 100 fellow citizens—children and young adults alike—due to the war. There are no homes, schools, hospitals, or mosques left; everyone is simply waiting for their turn in the queue of death.”

He adds, “The terms ‘calm’ and ‘deal’ have been repeated countless times, yet the war continues to ravage Gaza. We have grown accustomed to sights of bombing, killing, and destruction, yearning for the day when this injustice is lifted from us.”

Horrors and Comparisons

According to a U.S. intelligence report, Israel has unleashed upon Gaza an amount of explosive force equivalent to that dropped on Hiroshima—eight times over—despite Gaza’s limited area of about 360 square kilometers versus Hiroshima’s 900 square kilometers. The firepower directed at Gaza surpasses the combined military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and nearly half of the munitions deployed by Israel are classified as “dumb” bombs, lacking precision guidance.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Observatory has reported that the tonnage of explosives dropped on Gaza exceeds over 30,000 tons from a single bomb, with Israel using a mix of ordnance totaling 1.34 times the explosive power of TNT. In total, Israel has deployed over 200,000 tons of explosives against Gaza.

While these figures may seem abstract, contextualizing them within historical conflicts illustrates the unprecedented nature of the violence experienced in Gaza, marking one of the most severe modern wars. The extent of firepower unleashed on this densely populated area is unmatched in recorded history.

Destruction

From the Israeli military perspective, officials claim that the war targets Hamas’s infrastructure, including its weaponry and tunnels, as well as seeking to eliminate its leaders. However, the scale of devastation in Gaza far exceeds any tactical necessity. What is achieved by striking residential towers, crowded neighborhoods, and refugee camps?

Political analyst Mohamed Draghmeh posits that the Israeli government aims for a “never-ending war” against Gaza, reflecting Prime Minister Netanyahu’s personal and political calculations. Consequently, scenes of high-rise buildings being demolished and essential facilities destroyed appear increasingly orchestrated.

He further explains that the targeted attacks on defenseless refugees who attempt to flee only contribute to an environment of relentless violence and displacement, a strategy that aligns with some limited military objectives, but sends a clear message to Gazans: life here has become untenable.

The conflict in Gaza appears to be designed without a foreseeable conclusion, as observers read the situation, now entering the second year of warfare aimed at eradicating Palestinian existence. However, U.S. patience appears to be running thin—will the power to continue this war remain with Israel, or is a resolution on the horizon that allows Gaza to rise again?

Political analyst Hani al-Masri outlines the possible scenarios moving forward, noting that Hamas’s apparent agreement to the U.S. plan opens avenues for resolution. However, he cautions that there may be a diminishing role for Hamas as a significant negotiating partner following a potential prisoner exchange, given the regional and international desire to see the group ousted from governance.

Al-Masri believes that advancing a deal for a prisoner swap and reaching a ceasefire is the most likely outcome, as President Biden seeks quick, tangible achievements to bolster his image as a peace broker, without getting mired in complex negotiations, all while securing humanitarian outcomes like releasing prisoners and halting hostilities.
