Etihad Rail Aiming to Commence Passenger Operations by 2026

Etihad Rail has announced plans to launch its initial passenger trains by 2026, marking a significant step in the UAE’s pursuit of a premier transportation network.

During the Global Rail 2025 exhibition in Abu Dhabi, Azza Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO of Etihad Rail Passenger Services, stated that efforts are underway to ensure “smooth and connected journeys” for both residents and visitors.

The company is collaborating with local transport operators, municipalities, and technology providers to develop integrated solutions for the first and last miles of transit.

Passenger services will link 11 cities and regions throughout the UAE, from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah in the east, with key stops including Ruwais, Al Mirfa, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Al Dhaid.

The rail network will be designed to operate independently from roadways, significantly enhancing safety and minimizing the risk of collisions.

Additionally, the operator has embraced a “digital tickets first” approach as part of its goal to provide a modern, dependable, and affordable travel experience.

Trains are scheduled to run on precise timetables, with travel durations of 57 minutes from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, 105 minutes to Fujairah, and 70 minutes to Ruwais. Each train will accommodate up to 400 passengers, with multiple daily trips planned.

Onboard, passengers will have access to designated areas for work, reading, or relaxation.

Al Suwaidi remarked, “Stations throughout the nation are being designed as components of an accessible, interconnected network.” She emphasized, “Our goal is to cater to individuals, families, and groups, while adhering to international standards of comfort and reliability.”

This initiative is part of the UAE’s acceleration of infrastructure investments, aligned with its broader economic strategy. Rail passenger services are anticipated to complement the existing national freight network, alleviating road congestion and reducing emissions.

According to company forecasts, this project is expected to contribute approximately Dhs145 billion to the UAE’s GDP over the next fifty years.
