The Artificial Intelligence Development Council of Kazakhstan has appointed Dr. Ibtisam Almazrouei, an AI expert and head of the United Nations initiative “AI for Good,” as a council member. This council is led by the President of Kazakhstan and is composed of a distinguished group of global leaders in the AI sector.
This appointment recognizes Almazrouei’s prominent role in driving innovation and developing AI applications, highlighting the international stature of Emirati talents in advanced technology fields.
Dr. Almazrouei’s participation in the council will aid in formulating pioneering policies and creating innovative solutions in AI, alongside leading figures in the industry, including John Hopcroft, a theoretical computer scientist and recipient of the Turing Award, and Peter Norvig, former research director at Google and a fellow at Stanford’s AI Institute.
The council also includes Kai-Fu Lee, founder and CEO of Sinovation Ventures and 01.AI, a prominent investor in AI, as well as Goutchi Ito, head of the Shiba Institute of Technology and an expert in cybersecurity and cryptography, Laura Tyson, a distinguished economics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications.
Previously, Dr. Almazrouei was recognized as one of the top 100 leaders in AI globally by H2O.ai, a leader in open-source AI and machine learning platforms, for her efforts in developing impactful and ethical AI technology across various sectors.
Dr. Almazrouei is a leading global voice in AI governance and development, with her contributions reflecting the UAE’s vision in harnessing technology to achieve sustainable development and foster fruitful partnerships worldwide.
Currently, Dr. Ibtisam Almazrouei serves as the executive director of the Office of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technologies (OAIAT) within the Department of Finance in Abu Dhabi.
On the international front, Dr. Almazrouei is widely recognized for her leadership in AI governance, holding the position of chair of the UN initiative “AI for Good.” Additionally, she serves on the Board of Trustees of the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and is a member of the AI Council in Kazakhstan.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Almazrouei was the executive director and head of AI research at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), where she established the joint AI unit AICCU and led the development of the first open-source models in generative AI—Falcon 7B, 40B, and 180B, as well as “Noor,” the first and largest large-scale language model for Arabic, along with several other pioneering AI programs.
