A Magnificent Shot of a Rare Green Meteor Illuminating the UK Sky

A software engineer recently captured a stunning image of one of the most picturesque sights as the sky above Nottingham, UK, was illuminated on Tuesday evening.

According to the Mirror, this captivating scene of a glowing green line across the night sky was caused by a sporadic meteor, described as a “random” meteor not associated with any known meteor showers and can be observed on any clear night, unlike meteors tied to the debris trails of comets or asteroids.

Engineer Nicholas shared the remarkable photo on his account on X, stating: “I just saw my first sporadic meteor in my life! At 19:11 GMT, heading southeast while crossing the Clifton Boulevard bridge in Nottingham, a bright green line appeared extending from about 40 degrees above the horizon down to 20 degrees, lasting nearly two seconds.”

This breathtaking sight comes as October’s Harvest Moon is set to light up the UK skies in the coming days.

Sporadic meteors appear randomly from all directions, although their rates can show seasonal variations and tend to peak in the autumn and just before dawn. They mainly represent the remnants of older meteor streams or other sources of cosmic dust, as noted by a report from the Express.

Social Media Praise

Users on social media commended the perfect timing, outstanding quality of the image, and the engineer’s quick reflexes to capture the moment.

One user, Captain Quack, remarked: “I saw it too from West London… congratulations on the quick shot… excellent capture.”

What Sets Sporadic Meteors Apart from Showers

Sporadic meteors appear randomly in the sky and lack a concentrated “radiant” point like meteor showers, and they are not linked to the debris trails left by a specific comet or asteroid, which distinguishes meteor showers.

While sporadic meteors can exhibit seasonal fluctuations, with sometimes higher rates during spring and autumn months, their frequency varies throughout the night, usually peaking in the hours leading up to sunrise.

They are believed to originate from widely scattered remnants of old meteoroid streams or small, undefined showers.
