Speakers: Leveraging Advanced Technology Opportunities Is Essential

During a press conference marking the commencement of the 2025 Global Future Councils and Cybersecurity meetings, participants emphasized the critical importance of strengthening international collaboration in cybersecurity. They discussed leveraging advanced technology and artificial intelligence to create positive impacts in community life.

Speakers highlighted the urgent need for the development of legislative and regulatory frameworks that keep pace with rapid technological advancements and mitigate the risks posed by evolving cyber challenges. They affirmed that establishing clear guidelines for digital governance is essential for crafting forward-looking strategies that can safeguard vital sectors and ensure the sustainability of innovation across various fields.

Notable speakers at the conference included Borg Brende, President and CEO of the World Economic Forum; Sina Lawson, Minister of Digital Economy and Transformation in Togo; Khalfan Juma Belhoul, CEO of the Dubai Future Foundation; and Neil Geaton, Director of Cyber Crime at Interpol.

Brende pointed out that the 2025 Global Future Councils and Cybersecurity are convening amid the most complex geopolitical circumstances in decades. He regarded this situation as a test for the resilience of the global economy, which is anticipated to grow by 3% this year, noting the significant shifts in current economic growth drivers from traditional trade models to advanced technology economies.

He explained that the world is currently experiencing its fourth industrial revolution and stated, “Investments in artificial intelligence alone are expected to reach $500 billion this year,” adding, “AI could boost productivity by 10% over the next decade.

However, it will also reshape job landscapes and intensify international competition.” He warned of the substantial risks posed by cybercrime, with annual losses estimated to be between $2 to $3 trillion, equivalent to about 3% of the global GDP.

Transformative Shift

Khalfan Juma Belhoul emphasized the deep strategic partnership between the UAE and the Forum, asserting that the borderless nature of the AI-driven digital economy makes dialogue even more crucial.

He noted that the significant capabilities provided by modern technologies and AI necessitate the development of innovative regulatory frameworks. He called for a transformative shift that unifies efforts to establish practical guidelines through constructive dialogue, resulting in actionable tools.

Belhoul disclosed the foundation’s plan to convert the discussions held during the councils into a toolkit, actionable plans, and concrete guidelines aimed at constructing a secure and unified approach for the development of AI capabilities, with an emphasis on global expansion.

Added Value

Sina Lawson highlighted the added value of the councils for developing countries, citing Togo’s success in launching a mobile payment platform during the pandemic to deliver aid to those in need.

She stated, “Learning from the experiences of others who have advanced in this field is invaluable, serving as a foundation for practical plans to enhance national digital infrastructure and data exchange systems.”

She added that the councils provide significant opportunities for developing nations to enhance their vital sectors.

Neil Geaton pointed out the substantial gaps in resources among the 196 member states, despite cybercrime being regarded as the primary threat to all of them. He warned of a 142% rise in cybersecurity losses, urging for practical partnerships with the private sector and academia to tackle the challenges posed by AI.

The speakers expressed confidence that the Global Future Councils, a pivotal event in shaping the annual meeting agenda at the World Economic Forum in Davos, will contribute to developing practical strategies guiding the technological transformation phase, ensuring that the world can benefit from the advantages of AI and digital trade in a safe and inclusive manner.
