Insights from Lucas Bellieud on Electric Mobility: A Journey from BYD to Polestar

As the United Arab Emirates (UAE) intensifies its efforts to meet the sustainability objectives outlined in Vision 2030, Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility is leading the charge in the region’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. Lucas Bellieud, who was appointed as managing director of the company in August, brings over two decades of global automotive experience to guide its strategic initiatives.

In a recent interview with editor Neesha Salian of Gulf Business, Bellieud outlines his vision for electrified transport in the UAE, elaborating on Al-Futtaim’s collaborations with industry leaders BYD and Polestar, the company’s growth achievements, and the necessary infrastructure improvements to facilitate the region’s shift toward sustainable mobility.

With the sale of more than 6,000 vehicles from BYD in under two years and the introduction of the new BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup, Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility is confirming that the region’s future in transportation is electric.

What is your vision for Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility and how do you intend to realize it

To begin with, it is essential to discuss the UAE, as it reflects our vision. The UAE has demonstrated a strong commitment to more sustainable transportation, guided by Vision 2030, which clearly outlines the nation’s objectives. The pathway is laid out clearly, and the aspirations are remarkably high.

At Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility, we have set a straightforward yet ambitious goal: to emerge as a primary player in this transformation. Our role is to contribute actively to this agenda. It’s not merely about making statements — we strongly believe in taking tangible actions.

Our focus is concentrated on four main areas. Firstly, we have established partnerships with two crucial players in the electric mobility sector: BYD Global and Polestar, bringing significant brands to the market. Secondly, we offer an extensive array of mobility solutions encompassing pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and what we deem “super hybrids,” ensuring that every customer can engage with sustainable mobility according to their individual pace, budget, and preferences.

Thirdly, we are involved in developing the necessary infrastructure. Recognizing that electric mobility is closely linked to infrastructure, we established Charge2Moov, a company dedicated to creating charging infrastructure throughout the UAE. Lastly, we harness the expertise of the Al-Futtaim Group, a leader in the automotive industry in the region, providing our clients with extensive coverage, a superior customer experience, and reliable after-sales support. We ensure all our products are thoroughly tested for the extreme conditions prevalent in the region.

How do global and regional macro trends in sustainable mobility compare? Are there similarities in preferences

Progress is evident — mobility involves the movement of goods and individuals. The trends we observe in the region parallel those in other countries, sometimes advancing quicker or at a slower pace, but progress is being made. The government is providing clear guidance, and we are contributing to this effort.

The growing foot traffic in our showrooms, website visits, and buzz on social media regarding new technologies clearly reflect this momentum. I wouldn’t categorize technologies as strictly good or bad. Our objective is to present the widest array of technology options that genuinely meet our customers’ needs. Given the diverse patterns of requirements and usage among customers, a one-size-fits-all approach is inadequate.

By offering a range of full electric vehicles, super hybrids, and plug-in hybrids, we empower customers to select the best option tailored to their needs, location, lifestyle, and family size — all factors that shape individual preferences.

What demographics are purchasing BYD and Polestar vehicles? Is infrastructure development shaping these decisions

We are fortunate to attract a varied clientele. There is no specific demographic profile; we see a rich diversity in terms of age and nationality purchasing our vehicles.

Our goal is to offer solutions catering to all customers in the UAE, tailored to their individual needs. The rising number of interactions, leads, and engagements, both online and in-person, indicates strong enthusiasm for transitioning to sustainable mobility.

The surge of Chinese brands in the UAE automotive market is noteworthy. What drives this trend

The UAE has always been an open market, a principle that applies to the automotive sector and beyond. It is a land of opportunity where customers are willing to explore products that present good value propositions. This is a healthy dynamic as it promotes competition.

Our success reflects our ability to flourish within this competitive environment. Since commencing operations nearly two years ago, we have sold over 6,000 BYD vehicles, a remarkable milestone. While competition exists, it ultimately benefits the consumer. Our sales numbers demonstrate our confidence in the marketplace.

How has the first half of 2025 looked for your company? What growth trends are you observing

We are experiencing rapid acceleration. While we do not disclose specific figures, it’s clear we are witnessing tremendous growth. We anticipate 2025 will set a new record, and 2026 will likely surpass it. I look forward to sharing these achievements in the near future.

Which BYD models are leading in sales, and what are the particular attractions of the Shark 6

BYD Global stands as a leader in new energy vehicles, showcasing a comprehensive range of technology.

Our fully electric offerings include the SEAL sedan, a model we’ve provided to Dubai Taxi Company, and the SEAL 7 DM-i, our flagship SUV, known for its driving enjoyment.

Additionally, we have broadened our super hybrid and plug-in hybrid selections, which cater to a wider audience transitioning to sustainable mobility. These models alleviate common concerns about electric vehicle range and infrastructure. With plug-in hybrids, customers can enjoy the advantages of both electric and conventional fuels.

Our vehicles can operate between 70 and 100 kilometers in full electric mode, which is ideal for urban use, providing a quiet, responsive ride with zero emissions. For longer journeys across the Emirates, these hybrids offer an impressive range of nearly 1,000 kilometers, addressing range anxiety and contributing to their popularity.

The Shark 6 represents a significant milestone for us. This marks BYD’s entry into a culturally significant and commercially vital segment in the region, affirming our commitment to covering all essential automotive sectors in the UAE and our aim to be a leading player.

Our confidence in the Shark 6’s potential for disruption is backed by BYD Global’s strong technological foundation. This vehicle combines the advantages of a pickup truck—versatility, off-road functionality, and robust design—with superior plug-in technology, optimizing usage and fuel efficiency.

What advanced driver assistance technologies does BYD provide that set it apart from its competitors

Technology encompasses everything we do. Our vehicles feature cutting-edge battery technologies, particularly the unique blade batteries from BYD that enhance safety, efficiency, and design. They also come equipped with comprehensive ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems), ensuring a safer and more enjoyable driving experience for our customers.

What are the main challenges to the broader adoption of electric vehicles in the region, apart from infrastructure

It is important to emphasize that change is underway. This journey has commenced and is gaining momentum. Since our launch, we have seen four million visits to our website, over 43,000 individuals visit our showrooms, and conducted more than 10,000 test drives, indicative of increasing interest in sustainable mobility options such as electric and super hybrid vehicles.

There are challenges and concerns that some customers may have. Our role is to address these issues effectively. Super hybrids offer an opportunity for an electric driving experience without the worries of range or infrastructure challenges. At the same time, we advocate for pure electric vehicles, which are ideal for certain use cases.

Our mission is to provide excellent products while also enhancing infrastructure. Charge2Moov, established two years ago, is focused on increasing the number of charging points available for both business and consumer customers, effectively resolving charging concerns.

We are dedicated to investing in impactful solutions and forming partnerships. Collaboration with key stakeholders is essential to advancing this journey. We maintain open, productive discussions with electricity providers and major industry players, both public and private. We believe that improving infrastructure is a collective effort, requiring unity from all parties involved to expedite progress.

How are you addressing challenges associated with the supply chain for parts and maintenance for BYD vehicles

We are confident that we provide the best customer experience available. We receive robust support from BYD Global, which ensures high-quality products. The company employs over 120,000 engineers focused on innovation, offering world-class technological support.

We thoroughly vet all vehicles imported to the UAE to ensure they perform optimally in local conditions. Recognizing that the summer heat here can be extreme, we make certain that all vehicles are 100% compatible, rigorously tested, and suitable for our climate. This is a collaborative responsibility shared between Al-Futtaim and BYD Global, with no compromises on product suitability.

As a distributor, we are committed to delivering a seamless after-sales experience. With 70 years of Al-Futtaim’s legacy, our extensive network and expertise in customer service and support allow us to ensure superior service, including appropriate parts, maintenance costs, and packages, for a stress-free after-sales experience.

What is Polestar’s performance in the UAE market

Polestar is recognized for its distinct position as a pure electric vehicle brand with European design aesthetics. The products are technologically advanced yet simply designed, embodying a minimalist Nordic style that I personally admire.

Being a pure EV brand means the market scope is relatively smaller, translating to lower sales volumes. However, Polestar delivers significant value to its customers, and we have cultivated a passionate customer base around its trio of offerings, with more products anticipated in the future.

What key trends do you foresee in the automotive sector and sustainable mobility as you look toward 2026? What excites you, and what aspects are concerning

Our emphasis is on making progress. The direction is clearly outlined by the authorities. Our role is to actively contribute to this evolution by offering the best products, brands, and customer experiences to facilitate the country’s transition to sustainable transportation.

On a broader note, automotive mobility has always been associated with the concept of freedom. Our mission is to harness this freedom in a sustainable way, balancing individual liberties with collective responsibility. There should be no conflict between personal freedom and sustainability; rather, we should pursue a path that safeguards the future of both humanity and the planet.

This perspective may be philosophical, but I firmly believe that automotive manufacturers and distributors play a pivotal role. I do not believe in restricting access or imposing limitations; rather, I support a constructive approach to sustainability. The end goal remains critical — we must act decisively to protect the world collectively.

However, I am optimistic that we can achieve these goals while creating value for customers, fostering growth among economic stakeholders, and promoting sustainable development.
