Transforming Screens into Sales: The Impact of TikTok LIVE on MENA’s Retail and Creator Economy

Livestreaming, the instantaneous transmission of visual and audio content via the Internet, is changing the interaction dynamics among creators, businesses, and audiences. Unlike conventional broadcasting methods, livestreaming fosters immediate communication, creating a heightened sense of authenticity and community between content creators and their viewers.

In the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, this transformation is advancing at a rapid pace. As highlighted in Kearney’s report, “The Livestreaming Entertainment Revolution: What’s at Stake?”, the sector of entertainment livestreaming is undergoing remarkable growth and producing substantial economic and societal value. Various countries within MENA are poised to capitalize on this trend and position themselves as pivotal production centers in this burgeoning field.

While conventional video platforms like pay TV and linear broadcasting continue to function, they are swiftly being overshadowed by emerging interactive digital formats. Among these, livestreaming stands out, fusing entertainment and engagement, and appealing to a global audience that increasingly seeks customized, real-time experiences.

MENA’s digitally advanced economies, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt, are already witnessing a robust uptake of livestreaming. These nations are becoming frontrunners in a digital revolution that is transforming entertainment, commerce, and entrepreneurial ventures.

A major impetus for this transition is TikTok LIVE, which has turned into a crucial resource for brands, creators, and entrepreneurs operating in the MENA region.

The platform’s livestreaming features facilitate real-time engagement, establishing deeper connections between audiences and brands or creators in emotionally impactful ways.

“TikTok LIVE enhances traditional e-commerce platforms by boosting discovery, brand loyalty, and consumer purchasing intent,” stated Sami Kobayter, head of Business Partnerships for Consumer Industries at TikTok MENA. Live streaming sessions allow brands to perform product demonstrations, engage in Q&A sessions, and create interactive experiences that cultivate trust and loyalty among users.

This strategy has resonated particularly well in the MENA region, where consumers show a strong preference for immersive content formats that reflect their local culture and practices. Livestreaming introduces a sense of intimacy and authenticity that static posts and traditional advertisements cannot replicate.

UAE brands harness TikTok’s engagement capabilities

<pBusinesses throughout the UAE have been proactive in utilizing TikTok LIVE to enhance customer relationships and increase sales. Ranging from fashion to electronics, retailers are leveraging livestreaming to offer a vibrant experience that merges entertainment with commerce.

These brands are demonstrating products live, sharing practical advice, and providing behind-the-scenes insights that clarify their offerings to consumers. This approach helps to bolster credibility, particularly in local markets where direct and authentic engagement is highly valued.

UAE enterprises are also implementing strategies like flash sales, special livestream discounts, and time-sensitive promotions to create urgency and boost sales. Many are collaborating with trusted content creators who resonate with niche audiences, effectively targeting hyper-specific demographics.

An exemplary case is Samsung, which has utilized TikTok LIVE to enhance brand visibility and drive sales. The company launched a series of successful livestreams prior to Ramadan and Eid, known as “Ramadan Souq,” co-hosted by renowned tech influencer Ahmad Boarki (@slorks). These sessions highlighted special Eid offers and giveaways, blending cultural relevance with commercial appeal.

Samsung also seized the opportunity at the Dubai Esports and Games Festival by livestreaming from its Gaming Zone at the event. Hosted by popular Emirati gamer Mohamed Aamer (@mohdaamer), these sessions allowed digital audiences to engage with Samsung’s gaming products, promotions, and giveaways immersively.

Through the integration of livestreams with physical events, Samsung created a cohesive experience that combined community engagement with measurable business success. These initiatives showcase how TikTok LIVE can effectively power both online and offline sales.

“LIVE is emerging as a vital instrument for businesses in brand storytelling, community growth, sustained customer engagement, and even sales,” remarked Kobayter.

Fostering the creator economy across MENA

Beyond corporate applications, TikTok LIVE is nurturing a new generation of digital entrepreneurs throughout MENA. The platform is enabling creators to monetize their artistic talents, develop personal brands, and engage with audiences without the need for conventional studios, production houses, or intermediaries.

As per Yahya Munir, TikTok LIVE Trust & Experience manager for MENA, livestreaming has transcended mere content creation, now serving as a crucial income generator. Creators in the region are increasingly utilizing LIVE to connect with followers, advertise services, and even directly sell products via the platform.

This creator-centric approach is dismantling longstanding barriers to economic inclusion, making participation in the digital economy more attainable than ever. The democratization of content creation, facilitated by mobile technology, means that anyone armed with a smartphone, a unique idea, and an audience can access genuine economic prospects.

In the UAE alone, over 115,000 creators engage with their audiences through TikTok LIVE every day, indicating the platform’s profound integration within the region’s cultural and digital landscape.

$17.8bn industry expected by 2030

Kearney’s report anticipates that by 2030, livestreaming could add as much as $17.8 billion to the MENA region’s digital economy. This tremendous growth will largely stem from content led by creators and the associated multiplier effect on other sectors.

This influence is already observable in Saudi Arabia, where the livestreaming sector is poised to directly create 76,000 full-time jobs and an additional 60,000 indirect jobs within the broader ecosystem by 2030. Egypt is also seeing notable gains, with livestreaming activities currently contributing 0.3 percent to the country’s GDP, a figure expected to reach $4.7 billion by the decade’s end.

The larger implication is clear: livestreaming is not merely a fad but rather a foundational element of the evolving digital economy in the region. It fosters job creation, entrepreneurship, GDP expansion, and tax revenue, while modernizing the entertainment industry.

The rise of livestreaming is closely aligned with regional transformation agendas like Saudi Vision 2030 and UAE Vision 2031, both of which emphasize the importance of innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital and creative economy growth.

By empowering grassroots creators and small enterprises, platforms like TikTok LIVE support national aims of economic diversification, youth empowerment, and job generation. The accessibility of this format further ensures that growth is inclusive and widespread.

Ongoing TikTok support for creator success

To further enhance this evolving ecosystem, TikTok has launched a variety of features and initiatives aimed at helping creators scale their efforts. Programs like LIVE Fest celebrate top creators and highlight the cultural and commercial significance of real-time content.

Globally, tools such as the Creator Chat Room, Creator Inbox, and safety features during LIVE sessions have been introduced to assist users in managing their livestreams efficiently. In the MENA region, TikTok has customized its support to address local preferences, launching training programs and campaign backing during pivotal cultural events like Ramadan.

These initiatives reaffirm TikTok’s dedication to empowering creators, not merely as a platform for entertainment but as a genuine economic facilitator.

“This blend of accessibility, empowerment, and platform investment is transforming TikTok LIVE into a launchpad for the region’s next generation of digital entrepreneurs,” Munir explained.
