Bengaluru IPL Champions May Fetch Up to $2 Billion in Sale

The potential sale of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has captured attention, with estimates suggesting the team could be valued at up to $2 billion. The ownership group, United Spirits Ltd, recently announced that it is undertaking a strategic review of its investment in RCB.

This review will focus on Royal Challengers Sports Pvt, which manages both the men’s and women’s teams, and is projected to be completed by March next year. The decision comes in the wake of RCB’s historic victory in June, when the team won its first IPL title since the tournament’s inception in 2008.

Bloomberg News has reported that the owners are exploring various options, including the possibility of selling part or all of the club. The valuation reflects RCB’s significant market presence and popularity in the lucrative T20 cricket format.

However, the celebrations following the championship victory were marred by tragedy. Eleven fans tragically lost their lives, and over 50 others sustained injuries during a stampede at a trophy parade in Bengaluru. The parade attracted hundreds of thousands of fans, who lined the streets to celebrate the team’s success and to support star player Virat Kohli.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as “absolutely heartrending.” Kohli himself stated he was “at a loss for words,” highlighting the community’s profound grief amidst what should have been a day of joy and celebration.

As RCB navigates the complexities of potential ownership changes and recovers from the devastating event, its future in the IPL remains a topic of interest for fans and stakeholders alike.
