Remembering Lee Tamahori: Acclaimed Director of ‘Once Were Warriors’ Dies

Lee Tamahori, the renowned New Zealand director famous for his impactful film Once Were Warriors, has died at the age of 75. His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully at home, a statement that was reported by Rolling Stone.

In a heartfelt tribute, Tamahori’s family emphasized the lasting legacy he leaves behind, acknowledging his contributions to cinema and the inspiration he provided to filmmakers. They highlighted his commitment to telling stories that honor his Māori heritage, with later works like Mahana and The Convert reflecting his deep connection to New Zealand.

Tamahori first gained international acclaim with his 1994 film Once Were Warriors, which depicted the struggles of urban Māori life. The film was a significant success, becoming New Zealand’s highest-grossing film at that time and still ranks among the top five today.

Following this success, Tamahori transitioned to Hollywood and directed several notable films, including the thriller The Edge in 1997, starring Anthony Hopkins. He further established his presence in the industry with Along Came a Spider in 2001 and the James Bond film Die Another Day in 2002, which became his most prominent studio project.

His next venture, XXX: State of the Union, released in 2005, continued his trend of creating high-octane cinematic experiences.

Tamahori’s final work, The Convert, was released in 2023, featuring Australian actor Guy Pearce in a historical drama set in 19th-century New Zealand. A service honoring his memory is scheduled to take place at Te Mahurehure Marae in Point Chevalier, Auckland, on November 9, where friends, colleagues, and fans are invited to pay their respects.

His passing represents a significant loss for the film industry, leaving behind a body of work that broke boundaries and provided a platform for diverse stories that continue to resonate with audiences.
