Martin Scorsese Tries to Guess His Films Using Letterboxd Reviews

Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese recently appeared in a delightful new video alongside his daughter, Francesca Scorsese. The fun segment features Martin attempting to guess his own films based solely on quirky one-line reviews pulled from the audience on Letterboxd, a popular film review platform.

The challenge in the video lies in identifying his extensive filmography, which spans several decades and includes classics like “Goodfellas” and “Taxi Driver.” Francesca introduces the concept and reads out various audience reviews, prompting her father to guess which movie each comment refers to. For instance, a playful remark stating, “Ratatouille would’ve thrived in this environment,” caught Scorsese’s attention, leading him to immediately guess “Goodfellas.”

Throughout the session, Scorsese showcased his wit and familiarity with his films. Another review pointedly noted, “My alternate title: White people ruin everything, the movie,” which he accurately attributed to “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Francesca even shared a follow-up review that humorously remarked on Leonardo DiCaprio’s appearance in the film, adding to the lighthearted banter.

As they continued, Scorsese responded to comments regarding other films, like “Shutter Island,” where he offered a reflective clarification, stating, “I wouldn’t go so far as to say pro-lobotomy; it’s a guy who… You have to see the whole film to get it.” He also successfully guessed titles such as “Cape Fear” and “The Departed,” demonstrating his deep connection to his work.

However, the quiz wasn’t without its hiccups; he missed identifying “The King of Comedy,” despite an amusing review stating, “I hope Martin Scorsese never finds out about Stan Twitter.” In a touching caption for the video, Francesca noted, “He taught me cinema; I taught him Letterboxd,” highlighting the warm bond they share.

Scorsese’s engaging segment arrives alongside the release of a new docuseries titled “Mr. Scorsese” on Apple TV. This five-part series delves into his life, reflecting on the various challenges he faced throughout his storied career. Furthermore, he is currently working on an upcoming film that will star both Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, based on the ghost story novel “What Happens at Night.”

In light of his remarkable career, fans continue to be curious about Scorsese’s personal life as well. He has collaborated with Leonardo DiCaprio on six films and has three children of his own. At 82 years old, he remains an influential figure in the film industry, bridging the gap between generations of cinema lovers.
