Shahid Afridi has been appointed as the head of the new interim selection committee for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) following significant changes within the organization’s management. This decision comes after a challenging period for the national team, which recently faced a historic 3-0 whitewash at home against England.
The PCB underwent substantial restructuring when a 14-member management committee took charge, led by former chairman Najam Sethi. This transition involved the dismissal of chief selector Mohammad Wasim, paving the way for Afridi’s new role. Alongside Afridi, former cricketers Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar have also been appointed as selectors.
Afridi expressed his honor at being given this responsibility, emphasizing the need for strategic and merit-based selection decisions to restore the team’s competitive edge. He is optimistic about guiding the national side towards better performances in the future, reflecting on his extensive experience as a player.
Having retired from international cricket in 2017, Afridi’s playing career includes 27 Test matches, 398 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 99 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), where he was celebrated for his explosive batting style.
Currently, Pakistan is engaged in a two-match Test series against New Zealand, with the first match set to commence in Karachi on Monday. The team will aim to rebound from recent performances and showcase improvements under the new selection committee’s guidance.
