Konkona Sen Sharma Discusses Nepotism and Collaborating with Her Mom

Actor Konkona Sen Sharma recently discussed her experiences working with her mother, the esteemed filmmaker Aparna Sen, and shared her thoughts on the contentious issue of nepotism in the film industry. In an interview, she reflected on her initial aversion to acting and acknowledged the privilege she benefits from.

Konkona described her situation as having the “best kind of nepotism,” stating that working closely with her mother was a dream come true. While she recognizes the advantages she has had, she emphasized that she never aspired to be an actor, nor did her mother intend to launch her career. This perspective highlights the nuanced complexities of nepotism, especially within creative families.

The actress reminisced about her role in the film “Mr and Mrs Iyer,” revealing that her mother crafted the project while they shared a home. Konkona recalled her mother reading drafts aloud and how her expressions influenced the decision for her to take on that role. While she believes nepotism can be unfair, she acknowledges it is a widespread phenomenon across various fields and expresses gratitude for the opportunities her background afforded her.

“Mr and Mrs Iyer,” directed by Aparna Sen, was released in 2002 and features Konkona alongside Rahul Bose. Their collaborative work extends beyond this film, with both contributing creatively to projects such as “Titli,” “15 Park Avenue,” and “Iti Mrinalini.”

Konkona’s career began with her film debut in “Ek Je Aachhe Kanya” in 2001. Over the years, she has built a diverse portfolio, appearing in films such as “Titli,” “Amu,” “Page 3,” “Omkara,” “Life in a Metro,” “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag,” “Wake Up Sid,” “Iti Mrinalini,” “Talvar,” “Lipstick Under My Burkha,” “Ajeeb Daastaans,” and “Kuttey,” among others.

Most recently, Konkona starred in “Metro In Dino,” directed by Anurag Basu, which premiered in theaters on July 4. The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Sara Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Anupam Kher, and Neena Gupta. Produced by T-Series, this film offers a deep and emotionally resonant exploration of modern relationships, underlining Konkona’s continuing evolution as an actress in the industry.
