Tovino Thomas Shines in Narivetta Despite Perspective Flaws

Anuraj Manohar’s film “Narivetta” presents a gripping narrative centered around a pivotal confrontation between Tovino Thomas’s character, Varghese, and Thaami (Pranav Teophine) amidst civil unrest. In a tense moment, as Thaami readies his wooden spear, Varghese fears for his life, only for the spear to land harmlessly on the police van behind him. This scene underscores a key theme: Thaami’s anger is directed at a corrupt system, rather than at an individual officer.

The film, inspired by the 2003 Muthanga incident, delves into the complexities of systemic injustice. While it is rich in performances and narrative drive, “Narivetta” suffers from a pronounced perspective issue. The storyline is predominantly told through Varghese’s eyes, overshadowing the deeper motivations and struggles of the oppressed tribal community. The tension between personal integrity and systemic corruption is navigated through Varghese’s journey, which inadvertently sidelines the urgent plight of Thaami and his people.

From the outset, viewers are aligned with Varghese, a police officer seeking redemption and betterment for his family. His initiation into the police force leads him to confront stark injustices hidden within the state’s operations. The film allows glimpses into his life—engaging moments with his girlfriend, Nancy, paint him as a well-intentioned individual. However, as he joins the police, the harsh realities of violence and deprivation come to the forefront, amplifying his moral struggle.

Parallelly, Thaami’s life unfolds in contrast to Varghese’s. A member of the marginalized tribal community, Thaami faces daily discrimination and the existential threat of eviction from ancestral lands. This group, fiercely protective of their heritage, organizes sit-ins and protests against the state’s encroachment under the pretext of conservation. Yet, the narrative framing often leaves their story feeling passive, filtered through Varghese’s perspective. This dynamic highlights an ironic detachment, where a narrative of trauma is interpreted by an outsider rather than authentically expressed by those directly affected.

The central challenge of “Narivetta” lies in its choice to focus primarily on Varghese. While his struggles with the system resonate, this perspective risks relegating Thaami to a secondary role in a story that should have prioritized the community’s voice. The film’s power could have been amplified by providing a more balanced exploration of Thaami’s experiences and the broader context of tribal rights.

Moreover, the systemic corruption depicted in the film suggests the need for a narrative centered on other characters, such as Head Constable Basheer, portrayed compellingly by Suraj Venjaramoodu. His character could have deepened the exploration of state power dynamics, offering an alternative angle to the narrative.

Despite its shortcomings, “Narivetta” remains a compelling watch. It captures the attention of the audience with its pertinent themes and emotional weight, ultimately urging viewers to engage with the pervasive issues of power and accountability within societal structures. As a film that tackles significant societal concerns, “Narivetta” is thought-provoking and relevant, now available for streaming on SonyLiv.
