Ram Gopal Varma Shares His Take on the Deepika Padukone Spirit Controversy

The recent controversy surrounding Deepika Padukone’s reported departure from the film “Spirit”, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, has sparked significant discussion regarding work-life balance within the film industry. Notably, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has shared his perspective on this issue, suggesting that the situation has been exaggerated.

Initially, it was reported that Deepika Padukone was in negotiations to star alongside Prabhas in “Spirit”. However, discussions took a turn when she allegedly requested an 8-hour workday, a share of the film’s profits, and the option to avoid delivering her dialogues in Telugu. These demands reportedly did not align with Vanga’s expectations, leading to tensions between the two.

This controversy prompted a debate about the concept of fixed working hours for actors. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Ram Gopal Varma addressed the topic, emphasizing that agreements regarding work hours should be mutually negotiated. He stated, “When it comes to having fixed shift timings for actors, I really think that it is an agreement between two people. Each of them has a right to say what they want, and the other one has a right to refuse.”

Varma also criticized the media’s portrayal of the situation, claiming it had been blown out of proportion. He elaborated, explaining that actors and filmmakers should be free to negotiate their working terms. “But how can one human being force another human being to do something? And they can agree to work or not work with each other… But that thing was just kind of blown up in the media,” he added.

On the subject of fixed shift hours, Varma expressed skepticism about their practicality, given the unpredictable nature of filmmaking. He noted that various external factors can impact production schedules, such as lighting conditions or actor availability. “There are too many factors which can factor in,” he explained.

Shifting focus to his own projects, Varma recently released his thriller “Saaree” on Lionsgate Play. The film, directed by Giri Krishna Kamal, tells the story of Kittu, a photographer whose obsession with a woman he sees in a saree becomes all-consuming. The film premiered on June 27 and has elicited discussions around the influence of social media on personal relationships.

Reflecting on the audience’s response, Varma remarked, “The film deals with the issue around how social media can influence. How people get in touch with each other without knowing any backgrounds, and they get into relationships… And what dangers it can cause.”

He also commented on the differences between audiences who prefer watching films in theaters compared to those who favor streaming platforms. Varma noted, “Both are two different mediums. We have this habit of generalising the audience. Some people like to see some films in the theatre and some like to watch them at home. One can’t generalise it because every platform and every avenue has its own audience.”

Through this thoughtful analysis, Ram Gopal Varma sheds light on the complexities within the film industry, particularly concerning actor work schedules and the evolving landscape of audience viewing preferences.
