FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem recently met with French President Emmanuel Macron to reaffirm the strong partnership between France and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). This meeting emphasized their shared priorities in motorsport, road safety, mobility, and the protection of young people in the digital space.
Situated in Paris, the FIA’s headquarters solidifies France’s significance in the Federation’s history. The discussions focused on France’s pivotal role in global motorsport, highlighted by notable events such as the Paris-Rouen trial in 1894 and the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. These events not only draw thousands of spectators but also support over 1,000 full-time jobs, contributing more than €162 million to the French economy.
The leaders also addressed France’s representation in the FIA Formula 1 Championship and the achievements of French talent in various FIA World Championships. They acknowledged the contributions of French manufacturers and promoters in shaping the landscape of international motorsport while discussing visa facilitation for global FIA delegates attending meetings in Paris.
Joining the conversation were President Yann de Pontbriand of the Automobile Club de France (ACF) and Pierre Gosselin, President of the Fédération Française du Sport Automobile (FFSA). Their presence highlighted the role of these clubs in promoting safe and responsible mobility, a principle deeply rooted in France’s automotive history.
Additionally, the dialogue touched on crucial issues like road safety and sustainable mobility. Ben Sulayem and Macron explored new initiatives to enhance safety, affordability, and sustainability in transportation. In this regard, the FIA Driver Safety Index was introduced as a pioneering global benchmark aimed at assessing and comparing driver risk using advanced AI technology.
Protecting young athletes and fostering respect online emerged as another significant topic. They discussed the FIA’s United Against Online Abuse (UAOA) campaign, which aligns with France’s policies concerning social media safety for children. This initiative, supported by both governments and sporting organizations, aims to establish safer and more inclusive environments for the sporting community using a combination of regulation, education, and technology.
Reflecting on the meeting, Ben Sulayem stated, “Today highlights the deep and historic connection between France and the FIA, a bond that stretches back to the founding of our Federation in Paris over a century ago. Together, we are committed to advancing safer roads, more sustainable and accessible mobility for all, and fostering innovation in motorsport that benefits communities worldwide.”
He concluded by recognizing France’s longstanding role at the forefront of automotive development, expressing his privilege in collaborating with President Macron to maintain this legacy while addressing contemporary mobility challenges.
