Taylor Fritz commenced his ATP Finals campaign in Turin with a solid victory over Italian Lorenzo Musetti, triumphing 6-3, 6-4. The match marked a successful start for Fritz, who was the finalist in the previous year’s tournament.
Musetti stepped in as a late replacement for the absent Novak Djokovic and initially showed promise. However, as the match progressed, he began to fatigue, despite significant support from the local crowd at the Inalpi Arena. Fritz’s service game became a critical factor in his performance, proving hard to counter.
A pivotal moment arose during the third game, where Fritz saved four break points while serving two aces. This momentum shifted when he broke Musetti’s serve, taking a 3-1 lead. Musetti, who had claimed a straightforward win in his first service game, struggled with break points for the remainder of the opening set.
Reflecting on his performance, Fritz noted, “I did a great job early on in the match to serve my way out of trouble and save some break points.” He expressed satisfaction with his overall performance, highlighting the effectiveness of his game strategy.
In the second set, Musetti attempted to mount a comeback after saving four break points early on. However, two double faults during his next service game allowed Fritz to secure a crucial break. The American showcased his powerful serve with nine aces in the second set, including three service games where he held serve to love.
Despite the crowd’s resurgence when Musetti held a 30-0 advantage while Fritz served for the match, the American responded with two more aces, sealing his victory. “I’m really happy I was able to serve it out there and he didn’t come back to ruin it,” Fritz remarked after the match.
Although Musetti’s ATP Finals debut ended in defeat, he captured the audience’s attention with impressive drop shots that showcased his skills at the net. He also attempted an underarm serve that did not go as planned. Throughout the match, Fritz effectively controlled rallies from the baseline, continuing his strong form after reaching the semifinals in 2022.
In the other match within the Jimmy Connors Group, top seed Carlos Alcaraz secured a hard-fought victory against Alex de Minaur, winning 7-6(5), 6-2. The group features a round-robin format, with all four players facing each other for a chance to advance to the semifinals.
Later on Monday, the excitement continues as Jannik Sinner, the defending champion, is set to face Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Bjorn Borg Group, with fans eagerly anticipating another thrilling encounter.
