Rory McIlroy, a five-time major winner, has expressed his support for the Mena Golf Tour, highlighting its significance in creating pathways for regional players to reach elite levels in golf. His comments came while participating in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links.
McIlroy emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for players to compete on larger stages, stating, “I think any region in the world that provides pathways for players to play and gets bigger stages is a really good thing.” This endorsement adds credibility to the Mena Golf Tour’s efforts to nurture talent in the region.
The Mena Golf Tour is set to relaunch later this month in Portugal with a qualifying school scheduled at Troia Golf Course from November 20 to 22. The regular season kicks off the following week with the PGA Aroeira Challenge from November 25 to 27 and the Rolear Algarve Classic at Amendoeira, which takes place from December 2 to 4.
Following the initial events, the tour will transition into a four-event Egypt Swing during January and February. This will be followed by a stop in Morocco, which includes a mid-season Q-Sprint at Al Houara on February 22 and 23. The tour also includes a double-header in Jordan at Ayla, culminating in two events in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
In its regular season, the Mena Golf Tour is committed to putting players first, with guaranteed, tax-free prize funds of $100,000 for all events. The Q-Sprint offers new entrants a second chance to qualify, while current members have the opportunity to improve their rankings with a $50,000 purse.
As the only professional golf circuit in the region recognized by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), the Mena Golf Tour provides players a chance to earn OWGR points and advance to higher-level competitions. The circuit also allows elite amateurs to accumulate World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, helping them enhance their standing.
Keith Waters, the Chairman and Commissioner of the Mena Golf Tour, highlighted the significance of McIlroy’s remarks, stating that they reaffirm the tour’s mission. Waters commented, “To have someone of Rory’s stature acknowledge the value of pathways like ours is incredibly encouraging.” He added that the tour’s focus is on creating a player-centric environment with guaranteed purses, prompt payouts, and a structured pathway for talent from the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. McIlroy’s support reinforces the tour’s objective of fostering growth in regional golf talent.
